Audio Research I/50
I/50 combines sublime performance and simplicity while accommodating a variety of musical sources in a single elegant package. Hand-crafted in Minnesota, the I/50 is built with the same attention to detail as all other Audio Research products – each one is bench-tested twice and gets its own listening test with sound engineer Warren Gehl.
The foundation is an all-tube amplification circuit using two matched sets of 6550 power tubes, fed by 6922 input tubes. The traditional combination of power and grace for which Audio Research is renowned is instantly recognizable even in this compact model. Challenge the I/50 and be surprised by its depth of bass and dynamic expression. Two LexieTubes® provide display information for input selection and volume.
Three single-ended inputs and one XLR input provide connectivity for your analog components, along with 4 and 8 Ohm speaker taps to accommodate your speaker of choice. One input can even be assigned for pass-through function. A full-function metal remote control provides further convenience and ease. An optional tube cage is available.
Optional DAC and Phono modules round out your ability to include all your favorite recordings and listening styles. The AKM Velvet Sound DAC chip facilitates high resolution formats over USB, Optical, Coax, and even upsampling Bluetooth. Combined with the I/50’s output stage, the result is finely graded resolution, but also authenticity of tone and purity that is rarely heard outside of the finest reference gear. The I/50 has earned high acclaim for its ability to communicate musical intent and flow at a reasonable price and do so with a wide variety of partnering loudspeaker brands.
The optional Phono module offers 42dB of gain to support Moving Magnet and a generous array of quality High Output Moving Coil cartridges to help you build a high-performance analog system with I/50 as the heart.
The ability of the I/50 to reconstruct a musical experience will thrill and excite all who hear it.
The I/50 is a fully integrated product while providing true Audio Research performance and sound quality.

Audio Research I/50 — compact tube integrated with big, refined sound
The I/50 pairs a stylish, compact chassis and holographic soundstage with a transparent, mid-forward tube character that reviewers say delivers remarkable detail and presence. HiFi News and SoundStage Solo highlight the amp's expansive imaging and depth; StereoNET and hi-fi+ praise its lifelike midrange, extended treble and fast transient response. Built around three 6922 triodes and two matched pairs of 6550WE output tubes, the I/50 offers 50Wpc of push–pull power, multi-tap speaker outputs and a distinctive LexieTube display. Its finish options and compact footprint suit apartment systems and discerning listeners who want a single-box, musical solution. Multiple reviewers emphasize that the I/50 punches above its spec and represents exceptional sonic value when paired with the right speakers.
Pros
- Exceptional, three-dimensional soundstage and stable off‑axis imaging, making instruments and voices feel naturally placed in space.
- Lifelike midrange transparency and refined treble extension that reveal harmonic detail without artificial coloration.
- Surprisingly punchy dynamics and headroom for a 50W amplifier—able to drive a wide range of speakers when matched appropriately.
&
Cons
- Some users reported a control‑software quirk where the amp can go into standby unexpectedly, requiring a manual restart cycle.
- Tube biasing and output‑tube replacement require dealer service (no user bias adjustment) and the design limits tube-type swapping, reducing DIY tinkering.
- Key upgrades (phono and DAC modules) are optional add-ons rather than built-in, which adds to total system cost if you want those functions.

Dynamics
91/100
Reviewers consistently praise the I/50's transient response, drive and ability to punch above its 50W rating ('fast, unconstrained and dynamic', 'punches above its weight', SoundStage Solo, StereoNET, HiFi News). Given its push-pull 6550WE tube topology and repeated evidence of effortless control and headroom with various speakers (including large Sasha DAWs), it earns an exceptional dynamics rating appropriate to its power band.
Soundstage Imaging
93/100
Across reviews the amp is described as holographic with exceptional depth and instrument separation ('greatest depth perspectives', 'stage extended beyond the speakers' edges', 'pinpoint focus and precision', SoundStage Solo, HiFi News, hi-fi+). Annotated comments about disappearing speakers and stable off-axis imaging support a very high score for imaging and staging.

Build Quality
90/100
Reviewers note high-quality, rock-solid chassis finishes and distinctive industrial touches like the LexieTube display and tidy compact footprint (hi-fi+, SoundStage Solo, HiFi News). The overall construction, thermal layout and finished presentation are repeatedly praised, justifying a strong build score.
Features Connectivity
86/100
The standard I/50 offers three line and one balanced input, selectable home-cinema pass-through on a SE input, multi-way 4/8 ohm speaker taps and a 6.25mm headphone jack; optional MM/MC phono and DAC modules are available (hi-fi+, SoundStage Solo). Counting built-in balanced input, headphone out and speaker taps/home-theatre pass-through yields a well-featured but not fully loaded connectivity score.
Value for Money
96/100
Multiple reviewers explicitly call the I/50 a steal or exceptional for the price and praise its combination of sound, looks and usability for the money (SoundStage Solo: 'at its price, it's a steal'; hi-fi+: 'anyone could live with and enjoy'; Audiophilepure/HiFi News similarly effusive). That consistent strong praise across outlets supports a top-tier value assessment.
