Captivating sound

Have you ever experienced the dynamic range of a grand piano live in a concert? From the delicate pianopianissimo, wafting like a down feather, right up to brute attacks in which the steel strings almost want to burst? The boisterous dynamics, the pianoforte, the virtuoso interplay between loud and quiet tones, all of this generates deepest emotions.

Such leaps in dynamics really put loudspeakers in front of a mammoth task. While the grand piano uses its strings and corpus for transmitting sound energy, speakers instead have to release a tremendous amount of sonic energy through their drivers. In contrast to the musical instrument, whose corpus marks timbre and volume, a speaker cabinet has to remain in stoic calm. If a speaker starts to resonate, then this inevitably leads to adverse tonal discoloration.

Audio Physic’s goal has always been to design loudspeakers in such a way that their enclosure has no influence on the reproduction. As a result, the new Avantera, like all Audio Physic top models, features a timeless design.Sound impairing standing waves arising in the interior of the enclosure can thus be avoided. Bracings and extremely torsion-resistant ceramic foam panels additionally strengthen the cabinet and offer the drivers perfect conditions for optimum performance.

Drivers of the latest generation are used throughout all frequency ranges. The drivers, as well as the various PCB boards, crossovers and also the connection terminal itself, are mechanically decoupled from the speaker’s enclosure. The consistent implementation of this particular Audio Physic philosophy is reflected in superb measurement results and an extremely open, natural sound. Extreme dynamic leaps the new Avantera easily masters with hands down while always pursuing the path of sonic virtues.

There has always been music that listening to at high volumes is just more fun. Anyone who ever has experienced a live performance by Techno guru Paul Kalkbrenner in Germany’s metropolis Berlin knows how such beats can lead to real group dynamics. With pervasive impact, the fat bass sound takes possession of the audience, ubiquitous sticky air embraces the moving bodies and thousands of flashes of light flicker through the wafts of artificial mist. This is the beating pulse of the cosmopolitan city, this is the purest emotion.

Listen to Paul Kalkbrenner through the new Avantera and you will be literally drawn into the big city’s club scenery. A single touch on the speaker’s cabinet will instantly reveal how quiet it stays even at high volumes.

Whether there are large-scale orchestral works, physically involving techno beats or puristic meager Gregorian chants – the new Avantera is here to master the entire world of music. These acoustic masterpieces invite you on an emotional journey into the essence of music – whichever music you may like.

Honeycomb Sandwich Board

Very rigid material with an internal honeycomb structure, first used in our state-of-the-art STRUCTURE. It is very light and a lot better in avoiding unwanted vibrations and resonances than the commonly used MDF.

CCAC – Ceramic Coated Aluminium Cone

By coating a conical aluminium diaphragm with a special ceramic material, AUDIO PHYSIC creates a diaphragm that is at the same time very light as well as extremely rigid. When used together with ACTIVE CONE DAMPING technology the cone diaphragm is virtually immune against any partial oscillations that would otherwise impair the sound.

Active Cone Damping

ACTIVE CONE DAMPING is a unique design to reduce resonances in metal diaphragms, developed exclusively by AUDIO PHYSIC.

Bi-Wiring/Bi-Amping optional

Most our speakers have a regular single-wiring terminal to avoid unnecessary metal or wire bridges that would harm sound quality when used in single-wiring configuration (Which is what most Hi-Fi fans actually use). However, an optional Bi-Wiring/Bi-Amping Terminal can usually be ordered with any new speaker. Retrofitting only on special request.

VCT – Vibration Control Terminal

Unwanted vibrations have negative effects on sound quality wherever they occur in the signal path. Because AUDIO PHYSIC has made it their mission to fight unwanted vibration and resonance whenever and wherever they occur, the fully decoupled VIBRATION CONTROL TERMINAL (VCT) has been devised.

Ceramic Foam Bracing

Ceramic Foam is a high-tech material used for internal bracing in many of our speakers. It is much stiffer than MDF although it consists of 85% air. This means, the room taken up by the internal bracing is also part of the effective volume of air the drivers need to work. By using Ceramic Foam, we can build loudspeakers that match and out-perform much bulkier speakers.

Dual Basket Design

AUDIO PHYSIC’S unique DUAL BASKET DESIGN is a true break-through innovation and the most important part of the HHCM-III technology. Instead of the tradition single basket, our HHCM-III features two separate baskets to prevent and subdue unwanted vibrations already at the source.

4-Way Design

The 4-way speaker features four different drivers that share reproduction of the entire frequency range. One or more subwoofers, one or more woofers, a midrange and a tweeter. Usually the crossover frequency between subwoofer and woofer is set at around 100Hz, while low and mid frequencies are separated between 250Hz and 400Hz, and the crossover frequency between midrange and tweeter is normally set at 2,000Hz to 3,000Hz.

HHCM SL

The HHCM SL works without a spider, which means that kinetic energy is transferred in an unimagined way. This creates an outstanding and natural music reproduction that you can’t believe until you hear it.

HHCM SL – Revolutionary performance in the midrange

HHCT III+ Hyper Holographic Cone Tweeter

The HHCT III+ is even more tightly selected than the HHCT III and has WBT-PlasmaProtect™ contacts.

Invisible Subwoofer

Some of our speakers feature an internal woofer inside the cabinet provides the same deep bass and punch as an additional subwoofer without anyone ever having to see it.

Deliciously Crispy

The Avantera delivers astonishing clarity and a decidedly neutral, uncolored presentation that reveals musical detail and emotion with a remarkably three-dimensional soundstage and razor-sharp midrange accuracy, even in domestic rooms. Reviewer Stefan Gawlick highlights ceramic-foam bracing and driver design that enable controlled, confident bass and studio-grade transparency.

Fidelity Magazine — Stefan Gawlick

"No, these speakers are among – mind you, in my environment and with my ears – the best I’ve ever experienced."

Pros

  • Reference-grade, neutral midrange that exposes micro-details and timbral truth.
  • Expansive, three-dimensional soundstage with convincing height cues and precise imaging.
  • Surprisingly potent, controlled bass for a slim floorstander thanks to ceramic-foam bracing and internal woofer design.

Cons

  • Very high price (around €23,900) places it firmly in the ultra‑high‑end segment.
  • 89 dB sensitivity and 4 Ω impedance demand a powerful amplifier for optimal performance (recommended 40–250 W).

Sound Quality

95/100

Bass

94/100

Review highlights 27 Hz–40 kHz response and an internal 280 mm (11") woofer with ceramic-foam bracing that increases internal volume and stiffness. Reviewer describes 'confident bass reproduction' and reduced damping in the bass—evidence of strong extension and control for a slim tower.

Mid

97/100

Reviewer calls the Avantera 'decidedly neutral' and 'the best I've ever experienced' in midrange accuracy, noting unprecedented subtlety and vocal/instrumental realism. Multiple comments about transparency and 'acoustic magnifying glass' behavior support a reference-level midband.

Treble

95/100

Treble praised for 'incredible clarity and lack of coloration' and use of ceramic diffusion allowing minimal damping—yielding detailed, airy highs without apparent harshness. Design notes indicate advanced driver development producing coherent mid/treble integration.

Soundstage Imaging

96/100

Reviewer reports three-dimensional presentation, convincing opera-stage realism, and unusually accurate height cues. Comments describe improved separation and layering ('orchestra positioned lower, singers operate more freely up top'), supporting exceptional imaging performance.

Dynamics

93/100

Reviewer notes the speaker's ability to convey emotional impact and micro/macro nuance, implying strong transient detail and dynamic contrast. No reviewer reports of compression or 'running out of steam,' and recommended amp range (40–250 W) supports good headroom.
