ATC SCA2
Overview
The SCA2 is ATC’s highest performance preamplifier and has been in continuous production since 1996, testament to its exceptional performance and timeless styling. It is the ideal partner to ATC’s high-end active loudspeakers and also power amplifiers, such as the ATC P2. Balanced and unbalanced inputs and outputs provide flexible connectivity to a very wide range of partnering equipment. The optional phono stage is fully configurable for both gain, resistive and capacitive loading and its low-noise design makes it well suited to even the lowest output moving coil cartridges.
Features
- Discrete class-A low-noise circuitry throughout.
- High-current output stages ensure exceptionally low distortion into any load & when driving long cables.
- 500kHz bandwidth eliminates phase shift and contributes to the outstanding reproduction of fine musical detail.
- Optional SPH2 MC/MM RIAA precision phono stage with extensive gain/loading options.
- 2 x stereo balanced XLR line inputs & 6 x stereo RCA/Phono line inputs.
- 1 x stereo balanced XLR & 1 x stereo single-ended RCA/Phono preamp output.
- Billet Aluminium IR Remote Control.
- Hand built in the UK & covered by a 6-year warranty.

ATC SCA2 — class‑A transparency and enduring design
Leaning on a decades-old design, the ATC SCA2 is a no-nonsense Class A preamplifier prized for its ultra-transparent character and lightning-fast circuitry. With a DC–500kHz bandwidth, vanishingly low THD (<0.0005%) and >108dB S+N, the SCA2 resolves micro- and macro-dynamic detail while preserving timing and imaging. Build quality is industrial — fully discrete circuitry, substantial controls and a long-lived aluminum remote — making it as much a studio tool as a living-room centerpiece. Connectivity is generous (2x XLR, 6x RCA, balanced/unbalanced outputs) and an optional internal phono card supports MM/MC. Reviewer Jaap Veenstra of Alpha Audio highlights its unchanged, enduring design and studio-friendly features. Ideal for pairing with ATC active monitors or high-resolution systems that demand neutrality.
Pros
- Exceptionally transparent, high-fidelity presentation supported by ultra-wide bandwidth and very low distortion.
- Rock‑solid, long-lived construction with fully discrete Class A circuitry and a substantial, durable remote.
- Technical design (DC–500kHz bandwidth, high output levels) preserves dynamics and improves phase coherence for precise imaging.

Cons
- High asking price — the reviewer notes the SCA2 is expensive compared with typical consumer preamps.
- Lacks a headphone output and carries some legacy studio quirks (e.g., unconventional connector orientation) that may not suit all modern setups.
Transparency
92/100
Reviewers repeatedly describe the SCA2 as having an 'ultra-transparent character', and the spec sheet supports a very low noise/fidelity floor (THD <0.0005%, S+N/N >108dB). The unusually wide bandwidth (DC to 500kHz) and fully discrete Class A design are cited as reasons the circuit 'gets out of the way' and avoids phase shifts in the audible band.
Sound Quality
89/100
Dynamics
89/100
The very wide bandwidth and fast circuit design (500kHz) are noted as preventing phase-related smearing and supporting a dynamic, uncompressed presentation. Though the review doesn't use the word 'punchy' explicitly, the combination of Class A discrete circuitry and high maximum output levels suggests excellent micro- and macro-dynamic preservation.
Soundstage Imaging
88/100
The reviewer highlights the benefit of the SCA2's large bandwidth for avoiding phase shifts, which directly assists imaging and spatial precision. While explicit comments on width/depth are limited, the technical design and reviewer implication of improved phase behavior support a strong score for imaging and soundstage control.

Build Quality
92/100
The review emphasizes 'rock-solid' construction, substantial front-panel controls and a heavy, long-lasting remote — all signs of durable, well-executed mechanical design. Internally the unit is fully discrete and Class A, and the reviewer explicitly calls it a product 'made to last', supporting a top-tier build assessment.
Features Connectivity
89/100
The SCA2 offers 2 balanced XLR inputs, 6 unbalanced RCA inputs, balanced and unbalanced line outputs, and two RCA record outputs; an internal optional phono card supports MM/MC with adjustable loading. The unit also includes a comprehensive remote and tape-out functionality; the lack of a headphone jack is noted but overall I/O is extensive for a high-end preamp.
Value for Money
86/100
The review notes the SCA2 is expensive ('you will have to pony up 10,000 Euros') but does not call it overpriced or explicitly judge value relative to peers. Given the reviewer praise for transparency, build quality and technical specs, a neutral-to-favorable value assessment is appropriate in the absence of explicit 'worth it' language.
