Acoustic Energy AE1 Active
The changing roles of hifi equipment mean that audio systems themselves are changing shape. The increasing number of products with integrated pre-amplifiers mean that many customers are searching for an equally convenient speaker to connect them to. Taking full advantage of Acoustic Energy’s considerable experience in the field of active speakers, the AE1 Active is designed to deliver this convenience without trading performance.
The AE1 Active is a two way standmount speaker with integrated class A/B amplification and fully active filter networks. Featuring Acoustic Energy’s legendary pure piston ceramic aluminium cone technology, the AE1 Active has all the refinement and impact you would expect from the original AE1 housed within a self powered, fully active package. The speakers also feature Acoustic Energy’s proprietary aluminium dome tweeter with our unique WDT waveguide for improved coverage and room integration.
Ideal for direct connection to audiophile DAC/Preamps and Hi-Res streamers, the AE1 Active merges three decades of AE1 refinement with Acoustic Energy’s expertise in the active studio monitor sector. Fully bi-amped with two 50Watt class A/B amplifiers per speaker, the design offers unrivalled amplifier speaker integration and class leading dynamics. The new Active model offers all the musical insight and detail that has made the AE1 the audiophile’s small speaker of choice for 30 years.
Key to the success of the AE1 Active design is its unique pure piston ceramic aluminium cone technology. Now in its fifth generation, this 125mm ceramic hard-anodised spun aluminium cone offers exceptional stiffness at low weight. This negates the cone flex and break-up nodes at frequencies typical of paper and plastic cone designs. The tweeter is an all-new Acoustic Energy designed 27mm metal done unit designed to work in harmony with our Wide Dispersion Technology (WDT) waveguide. The result is perfect integration with the mid/bass driver, with extremely wide and spacious imaging.
Electronically, the AE1 Active is proudly an all-analogue design focused on performance without compromise. This includes wired analogue inputs, both balanced XLR and standard RCA, the highest quality linear power supplies and two pair-matched, high-performance 50Watt Class A/B amplifiers per speaker. While the design team experimented with wireless inputs, switch mode power supplies, Class D amplification and DSP, none delivered the audio performance befitting of a loudspeaker wearing the legendary AE1 badge.

Laser-like imaging and a wide, deep soundstage give the AE1 Active remarkable spatial presence, while its controlled, surprisingly deep bass and nimble, punchy dynamics keep music focused and alive. Reviewers from HiFi Choice and SoundStage Solo note the speaker's low-noise transparency and handy onboard volume plus ±2dB shelving for room tuning.
Pros
- Exceptional, precise imaging and a wide, deep soundstage that places instruments with clarity and front-to-back depth.
- Surprisingly controlled low-frequency extension for a compact 125mm mid/bass driver, delivering tuneful, well-integrated bass.
- Fast, low-noise presentation with excellent micro- and macro-dynamics—music retains pace, clarity and composure even at higher levels.
&
Cons
- Upper mids/treble can sound a touch forward or show hot sibilants on some recordings unless the treble shelf is trimmed.
- The very lowest notes may be indistinct or room-dependent; room correction or placement can be required to tighten sub‑200Hz performance.
- Limited modern connectivity—no onboard DAC, streaming, Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi—so the speakers suit users who want an external source/preamp.

Bass
88/100
For a small 125mm (≈5") driver the AE1 Active delivers impressive extension and tuneful low-frequency weight — reviewers repeatedly called the bass 'belies the size' and 'surprisingly deep for the box.' Some reviewers noted the very lowest notes can be a bit indistinct or room-dependent, but overall bass control and impact are excellent for the driver/enclosure class.
Mid
90/100
Multiple reviewers praised realistic, detailed midrange reproduction — vocals and double bass were repeatedly described as lifelike and well-bodied. A slight lean-to-neutral (some called it 'cool' in certain systems) was noted, but clarity and timbral accuracy are clear strengths.
Treble
87/100
Treble is generally airy and detailed with good extension; several reviews found the top end musical and non-sibilant at normal levels. A few listeners reported slightly 'hot' sibilants at high volumes that were tamed by the -2dB treble shelf, indicating a touch of upper-mid/treble forwardness under stress.
Soundstage Imaging
92/100
Consistently lauded for wide, deep presentation and very precise imaging — reviewers used terms like 'vast soundstage' and 'laser-like imaging.' The speakers produce stable, well-layered images with good front-to-back depth for the size.
Dynamics
90/100
Dynamics and pacing are cited as standout traits: the AE1s handle micro- and macro-dynamics with composure and can play loudly without congestion. Several reviewers noted surprising punch and the ability to convey musical drama despite small cabinets.

Build Quality
92/100
Excellent industrial and finish quality — 18mm MDF with bracing and damping, flawless veneers and rounded edges. Reviewers described the fit-and-finish as 'immaculate' and among the best at the price.
Features Connectivity
86/100
Active design with twin 50W Class-AB amplifiers per speaker, linear PSUs, balanced XLR and RCA inputs, volume and +/-2dB HF/LF shelving on each speaker. Lacks digital inputs, wireless streaming or onboard DAC/DSP (many reviewers praised the all-analogue purity but noted limited modern connectivity).
Value for Money
89/100
Reviewers repeatedly called the AE1 Active a 'bargain' or 'astonishing value' given integrated amplification, tunability, and sound quality. At the listed price point the speakers remove the need for a power amp and speaker cable, making them a compelling buy versus comparable passive systems and separates.
