Acoustic Energy AE120
The AE105 is the latest addition to the all-new 100 Series. A versatile, 2-way loudspeaker primarily designed for wall mounting, the AE105 is equally suited to a bookcase or shelf position.
The AE105 utilises a soft dome tweeter with WDT wave guide along with two 130mm paper cone drivers, one acting as a passive radiator for improved bass performance. Optimised for vertical wall mounting with the listening position at or below the tweeter axis, the AE105 can be used to simply enhance the stereo sound from your TV, or as Front L/R, Centre and Surround channel speakers within multi-channel home cinema systems… whilst partnered with the matching AE108² compact sub-woofer.
Finished in a choice of black, white or walnut vinyl veneers, they are supplied with rear mounting plates, template, wall spacers, black and light grey grilles for easy integration within any room décor.

Bass
92/100
Reviewers consistently note deep, well-extended bass for the speaker's size: Hi-Fi Choice calls out 'impressive bass extension' and 'deep, thudding sub-bass... powerful yet well presented', while What Hi‑Fi describes bass as 'refined... clean and agile'. Placement sensitivity is mentioned (needs distance from boundary), but overall low-end authority is excellent for a small dual-woofer tower.
Mid
94/100
Midrange is a standout: What Hi‑Fi praises an 'expansive midrange' and Hi‑Fi Choice highlights an 'open and expressive midband' that makes music engaging. Vocals and melodic strands are rendered with clarity and natural tonality, aided by a dedicated mid driver in its own sub-enclosure.
Treble
91/100
Tweeter performance is refined and non-fatiguing: reviewers note 'tonal accuracy' and that the treble 'never comes off harsh' (What Hi‑Fi) and is 'nicely resolved' on hi-hats (Hi‑Fi Choice). A slight lack of airy extension is mentioned, but overall the treble is detailed and pleasant.
Soundstage Imaging
90/100
Good width and depth: Hi‑Fi Choice reports a 'large and quite powerful sound... with a wide soundstage, good depth perspective', and What Hi‑Fi describes an 'impressively mapped-out, three-dimensional stereo imaging display'. Some reviewers note slightly less precise image focus inside the soundstage.
Dynamics
87/100
Dynamics are competent but mixed in impressions: Hi‑Fi Choice finds the speaker 'fast on its feet with good dynamic shading', while What Hi‑Fi feels the dynamic build is 'a shade off' and 'plays a little safe'—good micro-dynamics and shading, but not reference-level slam or excitement.

Build Quality
92/100
Solid construction: both reviews cite 18mm MDF panels, mass-loading and 19kg cabinets, plus internal sub-enclosure for the mid driver and a supplied stability plinth. Finish and engineering (mass loading, dedicated mid enclosure) support low coloration and stability.
Features Connectivity
80/100
Passive tower baseline applied (fixed 80). Reviews note Acoustic Energy's 25mm soft-dome tweeter with WDT waveguide, slotted bass reflex port and a supplied satin plinth—useful items, but no bi-wire or DSP features reported; score capped per passive-tower rules.
Value for Money
92/100
Strong value: Hi‑Fi Choice calls it 'well worth an audition' at its ~£800 asking price and says it 'does a lot for the money'; What Hi‑Fi similarly endorses it as 'a likeable performer... for the money.' Performance-to-price is a clear strength.
