Bi-Wire Capable

The AE100² is a compact stand-mount/bookshelf loudspeaker exhibiting qualities perfectly embodying those of Acoustic Energy.

The AE100² has been designed with a view to achieving high sound pressure levels from a small enclosure. This is obtained principally through the use of a 130mm mid-bass drive unit built around an ultra-high force, long throw motor system. Bass performance is augmented by a slot shaped duct allowing for a considerable cross-sectional area while negating the issues of air turbulence.

A 25mm soft dome tweeter featuring our Wide Dispersion Technology completes the driver compliment and is housed within a 15mm HDF cabinet. Taking design cues from the award-winning 500 Series and finished in a choice of black, satin white or walnut vinyl veneer finishes. The AE100² is sure to look good placed on speaker stands or bookshelves, while delivering a sound that belies its compact size.

Nicely Roasted

Surprisingly expansive soundstage and a disappearing-speaker image make the AE100 feel larger than its footprint, driven by a naturally detailed, punchy midrange and tight mid‑bass that reward correct placement and a higher‑current amp. Reviewers from Dagogo and StereoNET United Kingdom praised its timing and engaging delivery, a rare bargain in its class.

Dagogo

"The Acoustic Energy AE100² speakers at $499 per pair are a fantastic bargain."

Pros

  • Wide, precise soundstage and pinpoint imaging that makes the speakers ‘disappear’ for convincing front-to-back layering.
  • Natural, punchy midrange with strong timing and musical delivery across genres.
  • Solid build and finish plus exceptional value — performance that outpaces its modest price.

&

Cons

  • Limited deep‑bass extension — benefits from boundary reinforcement or a sub for very low-frequency material.
  • Some measured/subjective midrange dips and resonances reported — may sound hollow or uneven without EQ or careful placement.
  • Needs careful amplifier matching — weaker or low‑current amps can leave the bass thin or make the treble seem bright.

Bass

86/100

5.1" (130mm) mid-bass driver in a rear-slot port yields tight, well-defined mid-bass with good speed and articulation for the size; reviewers repeatedly note limited deep extension and recommend boundary placement or a sub for very deep material (ecoustics, The Ear, Dagogo).

Mid

86/100

Consistently praised for punchy, natural midrange and resolution; several reviewers cite strong vocal presence and coherent timing though one reviewer found a midrange dip/hollowness without EQ or matching electronics (ecoustics, The Ear, Dagogo, Erin's Audio Corner).

Treble

84/100

Detailed and open-sounding tweeter with good control in many systems, but can sound a touch bright or 'hard' if amp/placement aren't ideal; other reviews describe a restrained, non-shouty top end—depends on system matching (ecoustics, The Ear, StereoNET).

Soundstage Imaging

89/100

Surprisingly wide and precise soundstage for a compact speaker with good image focus and front-to-back layering when toe-in and placement are optimized; multiple reviewers praised its pinpoint imaging and width (ecoustics, Dagogo, StereoNET).

Dynamics

86/100

Propulsive, well-timed presentation with the ability to reach high SPLs from a small box; benefits noticeably from higher-current or more powerful amplifiers for grip and control (ecoustics, The Ear, Dagogo).

Build Quality

88/100

Solidly built and inert-feeling cabinets with neatly applied walnut vinyl or matt finishes, slim magnetic grilles and decent binding posts; reviewers found the fit and finish very good for the price (ecoustics, The Ear, StereoNET).

Features Connectivity

80/100

Passive bookshelf baseline applied (single pair of binding posts / 5-way connectors). No bi-wire/bi-amp or DSP features noted; rear slot port and standard terminals reported by multiple reviews (ecoustics, The Ear, Dagogo).

Value for Money

91/100

Strong consensus that the AE100 is an excellent value at roughly $499/pair (reviewers call it a 'fantastic bargain' and 'highly entertaining' for the price); needs good amp pairing but offers performance that outpaces its cost (ecoustics, The Ear, Dagogo).
