FOR YOUR EARS ONLY: Astell&Kern introduces the first Digital Audio Player to tailor sound to your hearing
Astell&Kern
February 26, 2026
EMBARGOED UNTIL 8AM GMT, FRIDAY 27th FEBRUARY 2026
Astell&Kern, a global leader in high-resolution audio products and accessories, has launched the PD20, the world’s first digital audio player able to create a sound signature uniquely tailored to the user’s hearing. Rather than simply delivering sound, the PD20 shapes it to fit the listener - transforming how music is individually experienced.
The PD20 features a Personal Sound system, developed in collaboration with global audio solutions leader Audiodo, which analyses individual hearing characteristics and compensates independently for left and right ears to create a uniquely tailored listening profile. Dedicated earphones are included with the PD20 to enable precise hearing measurement; users can complete a simple hearing test, generating a sound signature optimised exclusively for them.
To further customise the sound, the PD20 features a Sound Master Wheel, offering 160-step EQ control from –8.0 dB to +8.0 dB across Bass, Mid, and Treble bands, allowing precise real-time audio refinement without interrupting playback.
With typical Astell&Kern innovation, this sonic personalisation is far from the only class-leading feature housed in the PD20’s sleek aluminium design. The player features a triple-amp architecture – allowing real-time switching between Class A, Class AB and Hybrid amplification modes; quad-DAC precision with advanced signal alignment and advanced Digital Audio Remaster technology; and a choice of Audiosphere spatial audio options. All are detailed below.
The PD20 was designed as a true sound lab. Built around the concept of “Sound Lab Control,” the PD20 mirrors professional studio equipment in both function and design. Dual top-mounted wheels separate sound tuning from volume control, reinforced by slide switches for AMP and CURRENT selection. LED lighting provides real-time track bit-depth indication and visual confirmation of active modes.
The Astell&Kern PD20 will be available in late March, with a suggested retail price of £1799 / $1970.
PD20 TECHNICAL DEEP DIVE
Triple AMP Architecture — Choose Your Sonic Character
The PD20 features a Triple AMP architecture with real-time switching between three distinct amp modes:
· Class A mode delivers rich, high-density sound with minimal signal distortion, expressing a smooth, analogue-like texture.
· Class AB mode offers excellent balance and efficiency, providing stable dynamics and articulate detail.
· Hybrid mode combines the refined texture of Class A with the efficiency and power of Class AB, creating a new level of sonic balance.
A physical slide key enables immediate switching without navigating menus. In Class A and Hybrid modes, users can further adjust amplifier current in three levels:
· High: Maximises power delivery to create a wide soundstage and explosive dynamics. Even high-impedance headphones are driven with unwavering authority and a spacious, stable presentation.
· Mid: Provides an optimal balance between sound density and resolution. It preserves vocal texture while delivering a well-balanced sound that remains comfortable even during extended listening sessions.
· Low: Employs delicate, precise current control to suppress background noise and enhance sonic purity. Ideal for high-sensitivity IEMs, revealing even the finest nuances and micro-details.
Quad-DAC Precision with Advanced Signal Alignment and Advanced Digital Audio Remaster Technology
At its core, PD20 incorporates the ESS ES9027PRO in a Quad-DAC configuration, with four DACs operating independently to minimise inter-channel interference and enhance signal separation.
Astell&Kern’s proprietary ESA (Enhanced Signal Alignment) technology further minimises group delay by precisely aligning frequency signals, reducing distortion and improving clarity.
Advanced DAR, Astell&Kern’s second-generation Digital Audio Remaster technology that first debuted on the flagship SP4000, is designed to deliver a more natural and refined sound. Rather than sending the audio signal directly to the DAR engine, the signal first passes through VSE (Virtual Sound Extender), where lost harmonics are virtually restored to enhance sound quality. After this initial enhancement, DAR processing is then applied for a more complete upsampling. Through this process, listeners can experience a deeper, more immersive sound that remains faithful to the original recording.
Immersive Audio Beyond Stereo
The PD20 integrates Audiosphere technology that goes beyond conventional 2-channel stereo, delivering a powerful sense of spatial immersion. It expands two-channel audio into a virtual three-dimensional sound field and offers four presets: Subtle, Balanced, Immersive, and Echoic.
From the expansive resonance of orchestral performances to the realism of video content, you can select the sound atmosphere that best suits your listening preference.
The player includes 256GB of internal memory with support for microSD cards up to 2TB, dual-band 2.4/5Ghz a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi, DLNA networking, USB digital audio output, USB-C for data transfer and charging, and the ability to use the PD20 as a USB DAC for your Mac or Windows-based PC. The PD20 supports native playback of high-res PCM music up to 32-bit, 768kHz and DSD512 and is equipped with a 6-inch FHD+ display.
ReplayGain keeps playback levels consistent across tracks, while AK File Drop enables seamless, wireless file transfers from devices on the same network—no cables required. The PD20 expands wireless audio options with support for aptX™ HD, LDAC™, and BT Sink mode, allowing it to function as a high-quality Bluetooth DAC for music from external devices. With support for USB PD 3.0 fast charging, PD20 can be fully charged in approximately 3.5 hours.
For more natural, speaker-like listening, the Crossfeed feature blends left and right channels with adjustable parameters—Shelf Cutoff, Shelf Gain, and Mixer Level—to reduce fatigue and tailor the effect to your preference. The PD20 will be Roon Ready, pending testing and certification by Roon Labs.
