VTL TL6.5 II
More than seven years after introducing the TL6.5 Signature Preamplifier to wide acclaim, VTL presents a significantly revised version, the TL6.5 Series II. The new model incorporates numerous circuit improvements while retaining the best elements of the TL6.5 platform. The proven strengths of the original system design include a single chassis architecture, a fully balanced differential design, a hybrid circuit that combines tubes in the gain stage for voltage linearity, with a FET buffer for greater current capacity, a high resolution volume control with high overload capability, and precision-regulated power supplies. The highly-regarded user interface of the TL6.5 platform is renowned for its intuitive functionality and ease of use, with full-function remote control, and a fully bi-directional RS-232 control interface for increased compatibility with modern home theater systems.
The TL-6.5 Series II incorporates most of the advanced technology found in VTL's flagship preamplifier, the TL-7.5 Series III, for a dramatically higher level of performance compared to the original design. The new version features an extensively revised power supply based on current-sourced shunt regulator technology that minimizes impact on the audio signal. Far more precise power regulation yields dramatically improved rejection of noise and AC fluctuation.
The completely redesigned high current gain stage utilizes newly available FET technology developed for green technologies such as solar panels and electric cars that require a normally-on state. Unlike MOSFETs that need to be biased on, normally-on devices operate more like vacuum tubes in the audio output stage, with simpler circuits that continuously conduct current, resulting in a more tube-like sound. The high-current gain stage is shock-mounted like the TL-7.5, and has been further optimized for linearity, with zero global negative feedback.
Also included in the upgrade are re-voiced audiophile grade capacitors and additional bypassing.
Enhancements to the Series II result in an overall more tube-like sonic character, with more defined images in the listening space, a higher level of inner detail, and a dramatically improved mid-bass and midrange. The TL6.5 Series II is an exceptional match with any of VTL's other Signature products.

VTL TL6.5 II — Signature tube preamplifier
The VTL TL6.5 II pairs tube character with industry-grade control, delivering a musically natural yet incisive presentation that emphasizes clarity and dynamic impact. Its sound combines tight, well-controlled bass, a rich and present midrange, and articulate treble while preserving spatial cues and instrument separation. Reviewers such as Audiophilepure and Wayne Garcia note the low noise floor, wide bandwidth and impressive channel separation that let performances retain their inner structure. Built on a heavy, well-engineered chassis with balanced XLRs, multiple RCA outputs and buffered tape outs plus a full-function remote, it keeps tube operation practical. Best suited to systems that can match its resolution, the TL6.5 II rewards listeners seeking transparency, punch and refined musical communication.
Pros
- Exceptional dynamic range and very low noise floor, preserving both micro- and macro-dynamics for impact and detail.
- Transparent, musically natural presentation that reveals inner structure and keeps individual performers distinct in the soundstage.
- Robust build and generous connectivity — heavy chassis, balanced XLR I/O, multiple RCA outputs and buffered tape outs — plus a capable remote for real-world convenience.

Cons
- Can be unforgiving of weaker partner components; it reveals system shortcomings rather than masking them.
- Premium price tier limits accessibility for many buyers (review coverage lists the model in the $15k–$18k range).
Transparency
92/100
Reviewers repeatedly note a low noise floor and the ability to 'step aside' so performances retain their natural presence; one review calls out a 'genuinely low noise floor.' As a tube preamp it preserves musical character while avoiding obvious tube haze, so transparency is high though not absolute 'invisible' solid-state perfect.
Sound Quality
92/100
Dynamics
93/100
Reviewers highlight impressive dynamic range, 'rock-like stability' and reserves of power, and explicitly link dynamics to a low noise floor. The unit preserves both micro- and macro-dynamic contrasts, conveying punch and drive without sounding compressed.
Soundstage Imaging
90/100
The preamp is praised for letting each performer have 'its own voice' and for allowing spatial cues to come through, focusing on inner structure rather than surface detail. Imaging and separation are strong, aided by the excellent channel separation specs (>100dB @1kHz).

Build Quality
92/100
Reviews describe a stable, well-engineered product that minimizes typical tube hassles and feels robust in operation. Specs (heavy chassis, substantial power consumption, excellent channel separation) and feature set (remote, phase reverse, balance control) reinforce a high-build impression.
Features Connectivity
90/100
Generous connectivity: balanced (XLR) inputs and outputs, multiple single-ended inputs, two buffered Tape Outs, and remote control with extensive functions (mute, balance, phase reverse, fade). The combination of balanced I/O, multiple outputs, and remote/monitoring features puts it in the well‑featured active preamp band.
Value for Money
86/100
Reviewers publish price points ($15k–$18k) but offer no explicit 'worth it' or superlative value declarations; they instead emphasize its high-end performance and that it can be unforgiving of partnering equipment. Given the high price and lack of strong value language, a neutral-to-cautious baseline rating is appropriate.
