Scansonic MB1 B

View at Scansonic

The MB1 B is a stand-mount, two-way monitor. Our main goal was to create a small speaker that does what it does really well. The reflex port is placed in the front, and it uses special inlays that reduce noise to an extremely low level. While the speaker is small and stylish, the music performance is lively bright and bold, with a bass performance that defies its compact size. The speaker is front-ported to allow for placement near the rear wall.

The MB-series features the same good solid, two-way binding post. The feet are machined from aircraft quality aluminum and can be adjusted to level the speaker. For added rigidness, we have added a carbon sheet to the top panel; this, paired with extensive internal bracing, makes the cabinet inert and silent.

For the MB-1 we have a dedicated stand, with MB-series matching aluminum adjustable feet. The MB-1 also fits the X-1 stand.

Fabric grillfronts can be supplied as an additional accessory.

Overall Score 89/100

Rating for [object Object]

Nicely Roasted

The MB1 B's most striking trait is its refined treble, delivered by a Raidho-derived recessed planar tweeter that pairs with a carbon-fibre mid to create a silky midrange and convincing vocal density. Reviewers from 6 Moons and The Audiophile Man also note its front-loaded port and curved, heavily braced cabinet that keep coloration low while offering punchy, compact bass.

The Audiophile Man

"While some designs do nothing but spin you a fairy tale, the Scansonic MB-1B speakers deliver a big dose of reality."

Pros

  • Airy, non‑fatiguing high frequencies from a Raidho‑derived planar tweeter with controlled presence-region detail.
  • Silky, transparent midrange and strong vocal/instrumental density driven by the carbon-fibre mid/woofer.
  • Solid, refined cabinet engineering (curved, heavily braced, ventilated box) that reduces box talk and preserves tonal neutrality.
  • Exceptional performance-for-price: monitor-level resolution, staging and build quality that outperforms many competitors in its band.

&

Cons

  • Limited deep-bass extension compared with full‑range towers — fine for most music but may need a sub for first-octave weight.
  • Not as resolving in microdynamics or extreme detail as much more expensive Raidho-derived flagship models.

Sound Quality

90/100

Bass

88/100

5.25" woofer with front-firing port and claimed 45 Hz FR; reviewers repeatedly note bass is 'commendable' and 'no low-down help required' for much music but acknowledge physical limits of the driver. Performance is excellent for the speaker's small driver size without reaching tower-level extension.

Mid

92/100

Multiple reviews praise a silky, transparent midrange with very low coloration and strong vocal/instrumental density. Reviewers highlight refined, addictive tonality and accurate timbre derived from the carbon-fiber mid/woofer and careful voicing.

Treble

91/100

Downscaled Raidho-style ribbon delivers airy, refined treble with 'zero metallic aggravation' and good presence-region integration. Reviewers emphasize lack of harshness and a controlled, detailed top end.

Soundstage Imaging

89/100

Speakers offer impressive layering and deep stage extension; reviewers call imaging precise with excellent depth. Width is described as good but not extreme, so stage is more focused/deep than wide.

Dynamics

86/100

Shows strong macro dynamics and headroom in typical rooms with 'no strain at higher volumes'; microdynamic reflexes aren't at the very top tier but overall punch and musical drive are satisfying for the form factor.

Build Quality

91/100

Curved, heavily braced ventilated cabinet and noted top-tier workmanship; reviewers compare build favorably to much more expensive designs. Lower cabinet flex and quality finishes contribute to low box talk and premium feel.

Features Connectivity

80/100

Passive bookshelf baseline applied: two high-quality WBT-style binding posts present. No biwire/bi-amp terminals or special connectivity options mentioned; fixed passive score used per rules.

Value for Money

94/100

Reviewers explicitly call the MB1 B among the best monitors in its price band (e.g., 'best monitors under $3000' and competitive EU pricing cited). Strong performance-to-price sentiment from multiple sources supports a very high value score.
