bold.

Traditional loudspeaker form, classic aesthetics, advanced acoustic design and digital technologies meet bespoke Tasmanian manufacture. A juncture between contemporary audio style and sound engineering.

Reconfigured.

Like any, contemporary loudspeaker design is driven by technology and trends. With Superwax we have integrated modern technologies into a more traditional loudspeaker form.

A constant directivity waveguide has been specifically matched to a 1” exit compression driver to provide uniform high frequency dispersion, resulting in unparalleled acoustic performance. This piece is cast from bronze and hand finished to a soft, smooth lustre.

Dual 15” neodymium woofers provide exceptional bass performance and are accompanied by a 10” midrange driver. All three bands are driven by cutting edge Hypex NCore amplification inside of an engineered birch plywood cabinet, veneered in a selection of timbers.

SPECIFICS.

cabinet

The CNC-cut blackbutt veneered birch cabinet uses interlocking internal parts for rigidity. A sealed trapezoidal cabinet that houses the 10” neodymium midrange device doubles as a sophisticated bracing mechanism for the front and rear planes of the 357 litre bass cabinet. The extrordinary size, combined with two 15” neodymium bass drivers means the ported bass element has effortless extension well into sub-bass, with a smooth, natural roll off.

waveguide

The solid bronze 18” waveguide is cast in Hobart using a green sand method. After hand finishing the once rough bronze surface develops it’s lustre. Each waveguide has a slightly different appearance, a texture leftover from sand casting. At the transducer interface, the waveguide is CNC machined to accept the matched 1” exit titanium compression driver.

technology

A Hypex FusionAmp is mounted to each of the mid/bass cabinets. FA503 units provide a total of 950W per cabinet, with superbly low distortion. This combination makes what could be a complex beast to set up quite simply plug and play. Each loudspeaker has provisions for balanced and unbalanced analogue inputs, along with AES, toslink and s/pdif digital.

the result

It would be unfair to compare Superwax to anything less comprehensive. Whether you crave intense dynamics, punchy bass, or the delicacies of highly detailed textural elements in acoustic music, there’s something to be enjoyed for everyone. It’s broad appeal extends beyond pure acoustic performance, the distinct design elements and material choices speak a universal language. Turn it up.

SUPERWAX IS AN ACTIVE LOUDSPEAKER, BUILT TO ORDER

Superwax is an extremely capable loudspeaker, reproducing music with both finesse and excitement. At one metre wide and tall, it commands listening, and is a bold statement in any space. nCore amplification and Hypex DSP facilitate plug and play integration, with capacity for room correction, and three tuning profiles to taste.

Deliciously Crispy

The Superwax delivers tremendous low-end power and room-filling dynamics via twin 15" woofers and deep-tuned ports, while a handcrafted bronze waveguide and on-board DSP keep mid and treble clean and coherently integrated. Edgar Kramer of SoundStage Solo praised its scale, build and refined directivity, making it a compelling flagship for large listening spaces.

SoundStage Solo

"They do dynamics and low-end power to levels which would fill the largest of domestic rooms."

Pros

  • Exceptional low-frequency extension and slam, delivering in-room infrabass down to the mid-teens Hertz for authoritative impact.
  • Well-controlled mid and treble with coherent integration between tweeter and midrange, avoiding etch while preserving detail and transient attack.
  • Massive, high-quality construction — handcrafted birch-ply cabinets and a cast bronze waveguide deliver durability and precise directivity.
  • Fully active design with Hypex amplification, extensive analog/digital connectivity and selectable DSP presets (Natural/Live/Clean) provides flexible tuning for different rooms.

&

Cons

  • Very large physical footprint (1 m wide cabinets) and substantial weight mean these demand a large room and careful placement.
  • Bass, while powerful and deep, was noted to be marginally less transient-sharp than the very fastest woofers.
  • No provision for DSD playback on the onboard digital inputs — a limitation for some high-resolution listeners.

Sound Quality

94/100

Bass

97/100

Reviewers consistently noted 'tremendous low-end power', measured in-room extension to 16 Hz, and 'gratifying slam'. The cabinets and very large rear ports are tuned deep and support effortless infrabass in-room; only minor notes about transient sharpness prevent a perfect mark.

Mid

94/100

Midrange described as clear, present and coherent with the tweeter; vocals and piano showed realistic timbre and precise separation. Review notes specifically that the powerful bass does not encroach on the midband.

Treble

92/100

Engineering and waveguide control eliminated etch while preserving detail and transient attack, yielding a refined top end. Treble extension and air were praised without signs of brightness or harshness.

Soundstage Imaging

93/100

Review cites wide, deep soundfield with well-focused, realistically sized images and good stage depth (examples: Belafonte live album). Imaging stayed stable with excellent separation between solo and ensemble elements.

Dynamics

93/100

Dynamics were repeatedly praised: 'very dynamic' with 'staggering wallop' on orchestral recordings and tight, impactful percussion. A small comment about slightly less transient-sharp bass keeps the score just below absolute perfection.

Build Quality

95/100

Massive, well-braced birch-ply cabinets, immaculate finish options, and a handcrafted 455 mm bronze waveguide all point to exceptional construction. Review emphasises durability and architectural quality.

Features Connectivity

94/100

Active design with Hypex nCore modules, balanced/unbalanced analog, AES/EBU, S/PDIF, Toslink, master-slave tethering, selectable DSP presets (Natural/Live/Clean) and auto input sensing. Ample professional and consumer connectivity plus DSP tuning options earn a high score.

Value for Money

92/100

At the stated price (~25,950) reviewers place Superwax 'firmly in the high-end's high value space' given its performance, build and integrated amplification/DSP. High cost is noted but matched by capability, yielding strong value for buyers seeking this class.
