Ophidian Ffion
Small speakers are well known to produce excellent stereo imaging by virtue of their compact size. The less box, the more the speaker fades into the background and instruments and voices are brought to life as if in the room.
Even the best small speakers however are dynamically limited as compared to floorstanders. FFION aims to combine the best of both worlds.
A sleekly tapered cabinet design allows FFION to fit a powerful 8” drive unit discretely in the base while the slim upper cabinet produces an enhanced soundstage with imaging characteristic of a much smaller speaker.
Our hallmark Aeroflex bass technology enables the powerful bass driver to breathe freely and produce room filling, accurate and dynamic low frequencies whether you’re listening at low or high volumes.
A huge port system extends all the way from the top of the cabinet to the bottom producing a system free from chuffing and distortion and increasing dynamic performance substantially.
The angled exterior and interior panels combine to produce a cabinet almost entirely free of parallel surfaces which massively reduces internal standing waves and resonances.
The front baffle is tilted rearward in order to time align the output from the mid-bass and tweeter units for a focussed stereo image.
While FFION stands a full metre tall the deceptively compact footprint allows this floorstander to fit easily into most listening spaces.
A 22mm Sonomex soft dome tweeter provides smooth and detailed high frequencies for an enveloping listening experience that won't tire your ears out.
The 125m (5") mid-bass driver features an aluminium cone and solid alloy phase plug and a motor system with twin shorting paths for very low distortion.
The performance of the critical midband is further enhanced by mounting the upper drivers within their own enclosure - completely isolated from the bass system.
Binding post inputs are from world leaders WBT and feature conductors made of high purity copper, plated in 24 carat gold with a chromium finish.
All of the components used in the crossover circuits are from industry leaders Mundorf.
Air cored coils, ultra-low distortion capacitors and non-inductive metal oxide resistors ensure each driver can deliver its absolute maximum performance.

Cons
- Premium price and limited brand recognition may deter mainstream buyers despite excellent performance
Sound Quality
94/100
Bass
94/100
Review notes a 32Hz (-3dB) extension, 'sufficient energy' to render lowest piano fundamentals with credible weight and the Aeroflex design preventing lag. Reported low distortion and fast, linear low-end support an upper-tier mid-tower bass rating consistent with dual mid-woofers and the claimed response.
Mid
95/100
Editor reports linearity within ±2dB and exceptional low-distortion driver behavior delivering tonal and textural detail; vocals and instruments are described as coherent and highly revealing. Crossover points and driver usage keep mids in their sweet spot, supporting very high midrange accuracy.
Treble
93/100
Tweeter behavior described as a seamless point source up from ~170Hz with extension to 25kHz; reviewers note refinement and lack of harshness. Treble is detailed and well integrated with the mid-woofer, meriting a top-tier treble score.
Soundstage Imaging
95/100
Reviewer calls the imaging 'mesmerising' with exceptional depth, width and solidity and even uses 'holographic' to describe the effect. The driver alignment and seamless point-source behavior contribute to a very strong soundstage and precise imaging.
Dynamics
94/100
The Ffion is noted as fast and linear even at very low frequencies, with class-leading control and expressive dynamic engagement. Reviewers highlight low group delay and low distortion, indicating excellent micro- and macro-dynamics.

Build Quality
94/100
Cabinet engineering reduces resonances (few parallel surfaces) and component quality (low-distortion motors, careful crossover parts) is emphasized. Fit-and-finish is described as exemplary, consistent with high-end cabinet manufacturing.
Features Connectivity
80/100
Passive tower baseline applied: no additional connectivity or DSP features are mentioned in reviews, so the fixed passive score is used.
Value for Money
93/100
Reviewer explicitly cites 'sonic bang-for-the-buck of an extremely high order' and recommends buyers will enjoy long-term satisfaction; while the price is premium, engineering and performance justify strong value recognition.
