Bi-Wire Capable

Callas is the two-way bookshelf loudspeaker of the prestigious line that bears its name. Despite its compact size, it offers a truly surprising listening experience: extended and controlled low frequencies, the sensitivity of a floorstanding speaker, and a wide, stable, three-dimensional soundstage. Every note comes to life with power, dynamics, and absolute transparency, delivering a natural and engaging midrange — the true strength of this model.

Design: elegance and acoustics

Callas is a compact speaker with a 14-liter internal volume, born from the perfect balance of craftsmanship and acoustic engineering. The cabinet, entirely handmade, combines MDF with curved plywood, finished in fine veneers and impeccable lacquers.

Its thick walls , up to 50 mm on the front panel , ensure extreme rigidity and freedom from unwanted vibrations, while the special internal shaping around the drivers avoids turbulence and distortion. Behind the woofer, two layers of open-cell polyurethane foam, totaling 20 cm in thickness, effectively damp internal reflections and make the midrange the beating heart of this speaker. The result is a cabinet that not only stands out for its elegance, but also becomes an integral part of the sound performance.

The soul of Opera’s sound

The unique character of Callas comes from the carefully selected drivers, chosen with Opera’s obsessive attention to detail.

The Scanspeak 9700 tweeter needs no introduction: it is one of the finest tweeters ever produced and remains, even today, unsurpassed for refinement, naturalness, and reliability. It is currently used across the entire Opera production range.

The woofer, built by Seas to Opera’s specifications, is a 7” long-throw driver with a treated polypropylene cone, rubber surround, and a magnet system optimized with copper rings. Though crossed over at 2000 Hz, it can extend seamlessly up to 5000 Hz, ensuring perfect integration with the tweeter, ultra-low distortion, and remarkable tonal coherence. The rear reflex loading completes a design that astonishes with naturalness, depth, and control.

Invisible precision, audible magic

The Callas crossover is not a simple circuit but a refined project, perfected through long listening sessions. Built with high-end components such as Mundorf capacitors, MOX resistors, and OFC copper inductors, it has been designed to minimize loss and preserve the integrity of the musical message.

This two-way network adopts second-order low-pass and high-pass sections for the woofer and tweeter respectively. The two sections are completely separated, allowing for bi-amplification.

In addition, a dedicated switch lets you emphasize the vocal range (+2 dB between 300 and 3000 Hz), adapting Callas to different rooms and preferences without ever compromising its natural transparency.

Freedom and versatility of listening

Callas is also designed for nearfield listening: it can perform at its best even from just 1.5 meters away, turning even small spaces into personal concert halls. The rear reflex port has been engineered to minimize the influence of the back wall, allowing extremely flexible placement: only 5 cm from the wall are enough for optimal performance.

Whether placed on dedicated stands, a shelf, or a cabinet, Callas reveals its full magic when the tweeter is positioned at ear level, opening a three-dimensional soundstage that astonishes with realism and intensity.

Cons

  • Some listeners noted a slightly over-damped or midbass-heavy character that may not suit those seeking a leaner bottom end.
  • Unconventional multi-tweeter voicing and room-reflected energy can leave the top end less 'sweet' for listeners preferring ultra-smooth treble.
