View at Octave Audio

The V 40 SE is a line level integrated amplifier with 2 x 40 W peak output power. He is a further development and direct descendant of the successful V 40 and V 50 amplifier models. His powerful, clear bass fundamentals and his captivating resolution in the high frequencies win much respect.

His unique features lift the V 40 SE into the 21st Century, while his performance earned him the rare “Stereoplay Highlight” (issue 07-2009), a prestigious award bestowed by the German high-end audio magazine Stereoplay

The V 40 SE output stage consists of two power pentodes (Type 6550 JJ) for each channel. Due to the BIAS Control and Monitoring System, the use of other pin-compatible output tubes is possible to match the amplifier to personal taste, or to benefit from new or improved tubes.

Like all OCTAVE amps the V 40 SE is based on the enhanced pentode configuration. This configuration ensures the absolute stability of the amplifier against the unstable impedance of the loudspeaker. Impedance mismatch is without consequence and the V 40 SE is stable down to a 2 ohms load.. An important contributor to this stability is the single impedance output transformer.

The V 40 SE is the perfect amp for speakers with an average efficiency rating. But not only is the low impedance capability an advantage, with his exceptional Signal-to-Noise ratio of –110dB / Full Power he is also an ideal partner for high efficiency loudspeakers.

Of course, the V 40 SE features the Power Management with the Soft-Start-Electronics, the Protection SystemEco ModeBIAS Setting and Display, a Monitor/Record Output, the HT Bypass, the Pre-Out and a (Super) Black Box Connection. (See Technology for description)

Octave V 40 SE

Octave Audio's V 40 SE is a compact, highly musical tube integrated that pairs 40 W RMS of punch with a neutral-yet-sweet midrange and precise treble. Reviewer Terry Ellis of Pursuit Perfect System praised its balance between tube warmth and solid-state-like clarity, noting engaging dynamics and a coherent, well-focused soundstage. Built and hand-made in Germany with in-house transformers, the V 40 SE includes thoughtful service features — a traffic-light bias indicator, Eco mode, soft-start/protection, and optional external Black Box PSU upgrades. Connectivity is practical for analog systems, with five RCA inputs, an HT bypass and regulated pre-out. Ideal for serious listeners stepping into tubes, the V 40 SE controls bass, preserves vocal lushness and integrates cleanly into multichannel setups while offering high-end craftsmanship and musical polish.

Pursuit Perfect System

"it doesn't have the overly warm and lush sound of a triode tube amp or maybe the lack of bass of an SET tube amp being used on the wrong speakers."

Pros

  • Musical, well-balanced sound: neutral overall with a pleasing ‘pinch of sweetness’ in the midrange while retaining treble detail and strong dynamics.
  • High-quality, serviceable construction: hand-made in Germany with in-house transformers and an intuitive traffic-light bias system for easy maintenance.
  • Thoughtful feature set for analog systems: five RCA inputs, HT bypass, regulated pre-out and optional Black Box PSU upgrades for improved power delivery.
  • Impressive soundstage and dynamics for a 40W-per-channel tube amp — handles relaxed and intense passages with clarity and timing.

&

Cons

  • Limited modern connectivity: lacks onboard digital inputs, phono stage, balanced I/O and a dedicated headphone output.
  • Premium price-point may be prohibitive for some buyers—strong build and sound justify cost but it may not suit entry-level budgets.

Sound Quality

88/100

Dynamics

87/100

Within its 40W-per-channel tube class the V40 SE is praised for handling transitions from relaxed 'head-bobbing' to 'pumping and intense' passages 'superbly well'. Review language such as 'kept my attention' and no complaints about running out of steam support an above-average dynamics score for a medium-power tube amp.

Soundstage Imaging

90/100

The unit delivers 'good overall sound stage clarity' with very good timing and a controlled sense of urgency, producing focused imaging and coherent staging. Reviewers note stable presentation and a satisfying sense of space without excessive forwardness.

Build Quality

92/100

Hand-made in Germany with in-house wound transformers, accessible bias adjustment LEDs and screw pots, soft-start and protection circuitry, and a full-metal remote denote high craftsmanship and thoughtful engineering. Features like eco mode and clear bias indicators further reflect solid mechanical and serviceable design.

Features Connectivity

83/100

Has 5x RCA line inputs (including home-theatre bypass), regulated pre-out, record output and speaker outputs plus a full-metal remote and eco mode. Lacks phono stage, digital inputs/DAC, balanced I/O and headphone outputs, so feature set is good for a pure tube integrated but not fully modern-featured.

Value for Money

89/100

Reviewer calls it 'a great place to start with tubes' at £4,200, acknowledging cost but suggesting the sonic and build pedigree justify the price. Given the hand-made construction, in-house transformers and strong sound, reviewers frame the price as a justified premium in the tube-integrated segment.
