Pros

DSP presets deliver consistently well-balanced tuning options, from reference to bass-focused profiles, without muddy or bloated bass.

Extended, impactful sub-bass combines with natural, warmly organic mids and a smooth, non-fatiguing treble balance.

Small, lightweight resin shells are comfortable for extended wear and sit neatly in the ear.

Cons

Rolled-off upper treble limits sparkle, air, microdetail and the crisp articulation of treble instruments.

Soundstage is relatively intimate and average in scale, with limited depth and forward projection.

Supplied ear tips can be extremely difficult to mount on the nozzle.

What Reviewers Are Saying

"The tuning again in the Moondrop May DSP is just spectacular."

— Giz Audio

"If you're looking for something that's just a little bit more easy going and musical and engaging then the May is the way to go."

— Prime Audio Reviews

"In the end the May is a pleasing versatile listen that likely has something for everyone and won't offend anyone's ears."

— inToit Reviews

"The bass is pretty clean, dynamic, the mids are nice and natural sounding, but it's definitely lacking in its treble energy."

— Audio-In Reviews

SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 83/100

Reviewers find the MAY's tuning natural, smooth and unusually easy to listen to, with useful DSP preset options and a satisfying bass foundation. Its principal limitation is soft, rolled-off upper-treble definition, which restrains microdetail, air and incisiveness.

Bass

87/100

The MAY delivers extended sub-bass with satisfying rumble, slam and body, while reviewers generally find its mid-bass tight and punchy. A few note that the sub-bass weight can veil some low-mid nuance, but it avoids sounding muddy or bloated even in bassier presets.

Midrange

86/100

Vocals and instruments are described as natural, warmly organic and pleasantly intimate without becoming shouty or overly forward. The presentation is more safe and soft than especially transparent or attention-grabbing, particularly for vocal-focused listening.

Treble

80/100

Treble is consistently praised for being smooth, controlled and free of harsh peaks or fatigue. Multiple reviewers also find it rolled off, with limited sparkle, air, cymbal energy and microdetail, giving treble instruments a softened edge.

Resolution Separation

80/100

Instrument separation is considered good for the price, and the MAY remains composed on busier material rather than becoming congested. Fine detail, articulation and transparency are more modest, with several reviewers describing detail retrieval as merely acceptable or soft.

Soundstage Imaging

80/100

Reviewers describe an average-sized, somewhat intimate stage with moderate depth and limited forward projection. Imaging and in-stage separation are respectable, but the presentation is not especially expansive or spatially striking.

Dynamics Coherence

82/100

Bass dynamics, impact and the overall smooth integration of the tuning earn positive comments, particularly with the more engaging DSP settings. However, one reviewer found the default presentation somewhat lacking in dynamics, while softened treble transients reduce instrumental incisiveness.

FIT COMFORT ISOLATION PERFORMANCE 78/100

The small, lightweight resin shells are widely reported as comfortable and secure in the ear. The nozzle and included tips can be unusually difficult to work with, while the reviews provide little direct information about passive isolation in real-world noise.

Seal Stability

84/100

Reviewers report no recurring loss of fit or seal once the MAY is worn, and the compact shell sits securely and flush for the reviewers who commented. The included tips are repeatedly described as very tight and difficult to install on the relatively large nozzle, which can complicate tip rolling and fit setup.

Comfort

91/100

Comfort is a clear strength: reviewers call the shells lightweight, small and comfortable, with one noting they nestle neatly in the ear and do not protrude. Another reviewer reported no fit or discomfort issues despite the nozzle being somewhat large.

Isolation

50/100

The supplied reviews say little about the MAY's passive isolation in commuting, office or stage-like environments. Its compact in-ear shape may support ordinary use, but attenuation performance is not directly established here.

Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.

Build Accessories

87/100

Reviewers describe a good-quality medical-grade resin shell with a metal faceplate, alongside a cable and protective case that feel more premium than expected at this price. The included tip selection is less convincing: the older silicone tips are liked by one reviewer, but their extremely tight fit on the nozzle is a recurring frustration.

Value for Money

93/100

At roughly $65-$75, reviewers repeatedly regard the MAY as a strong recommendation for affordable, good-sounding listening, with Giz Audio placing it among leading sub-$100 choices. Its technical ability is characterized as appropriate rather than exceptional for the cost, but the flexible DSP tuning, polished build and forgiving sound make the package especially compelling.
