Metrum Acoustics Metrum Pavane
The Metrum Pavane pairs a remarkably analogue-like naturalness with inky-black silence, delivering taut bass, vivid dynamics and an expansive, precisely layered soundstage. The Ear found its detail revealing yet deeply musical, while the focused NOS/FPGA design and balanced connectivity make it a formidable source for resolving systems and exceptional recordings.

Pros
Natural, richly dynamic presentation combines tight bass, open detail and a convincing analogue-like character.
Exceptionally spacious, coherent imaging places instruments distinctly across a deep, wide soundstage.
Very low perceived noise, jitter and distortion create a clean black background without sacrificing musical engagement.
Well-equipped for a specialist DAC, with optical, coaxial/BNC, AES/EBU and USB inputs plus RCA and XLR outputs.
Cons
Unforgiving transparency exposes poor recordings rather than smoothing them over.
Requires extended warm-up for best performance and offers no headphone output, volume control or trigger connections.

What Reviewers Are Saying
SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 95/100
The Pavane is presented as an unusually natural and immersive converter, combining rich tonal weight and forceful dynamics with very high clarity. Its particularly strong showing comes from an artefact-free, black-background presentation that lets recordings sound vivid and expansive, though it is candid rather than forgiving of poor material.
Tonal Balance and Musicality
96/100
The reviewer calls the Pavane's naturalness more memorable than that of any DAC they could recall, and describes it as "very analogue." It is said to be dynamic, rich, fast and punchy, with tight, lifelike instruments and a coherent, exceptionally convincing soundstage.
Resolution and Detail
93/100
The Pavane is described as extremely detailed without becoming preoccupied with technical display. Vocals remain crystal clear amid substantial bass weight, while tiny cymbal strikes, instrument placement and layered electronic effects are all rendered distinctly.
Digital Performance
95/100
After warm-up, the reviewer found the Pavane notably clear of distortion and described an "inky black background." Noise, distortion and jitter are said to recede so the music can take over, although the DAC's transparency means bad recordings are exposed rather than softened.
Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.
Build Quality
88/100
The full-size chassis uses an aluminium enclosure with a black-glass top, available in silver or black. The reviewer particularly praises the screw-free front, top and side panels as an ingenious, luxurious housing, though there is little comment on internal construction or long-term durability.
Features Connectivity
79/100
The Pavane provides optical, coaxial/BNC, AES/EBU and USB digital inputs, plus both single-ended RCA and balanced XLR outputs. A compact remote selects inputs from the listening seat, and front-panel LEDs identify the active source; it remains a focused DAC rather than a DAC/preamp or headphone unit.
Value for Money
95/100
At roughly $5,295-$6,700, it is an expensive specialist DAC, but the reviewer considered its performance remarkable at the asking price. They state that they would not have believed this level of performance possible for the money a year earlier, and ordered one after only a few days of listening.

Manufacturer's Description — Metrum Acoustics
Metrum Acoustics flagship Non Oversampling Digital to Analog Converter.
Your DAC endgame.
The Pavane gives your audio: more weight, body and tonal richness. A more natural sense of the space in the recording. Or to put it more plainly, it fleshes out your music more.
The Pavane does a wonderful job of presenting even the most complex music in a natural and inviting manner with every last ounce of nuance intact. There’s no artificial sounding edge, no sense of a flat cutout image, basically none of digital’s nastier stuff.
The Pavane allows you to hear into the recording and the recordings quality. This is somewhat of a good news/bad news proposition in that you’ll really hear what’s there.
According to reviewers the Pavane by Metrum Acoustics is clearly onto something with the new DACs. That something, according to many ears, is musical enjoyment. Pure and simple
The Pavane is available in black or silver. The used top panel is a sandwich of steel and 4 millimeters of tempered black coated glass and gives the Pavane very distinctive looks.
- The Pavane is for those who want the very best. -
