The reviewer found that replacing a standard external drive with the E100A removed muddy bass, softened attacks and reduced musical expression. Across several host systems, it delivered a crisp, expressive presentation with stronger focus, pitch definition and more convincing rhythmic drive.

The E100A was repeatedly heard to sharpen leading edges, uncover softer details and make the presentation substantially tighter and more controlled than a conventional USB drive. Its high-quality clock generator, dedicated capacitor board and HS-S2 drive mounting are relevant engineering measures, and the listening comparisons reported unusually clear benefits in precision and definition.

The E100A does not provide its own streaming-control application; playback and library operation are determined by the connected host. The reviewer reports that both the Melco and comparison drives mounted easily within Roon, but provides little further comment on setup or software behaviour.

USB 3.0 Type-B provides the connection to the host, while the Type-A port supports daisy-chaining other Melco components. The connectivity is purpose-specific rather than extensive, but it suits its role as high-capacity external music storage and supports automatic power switching with the host.

The review notes a rigid aluminium enclosure with a 2 mm chassis, along with Melco's HS-S2 system to mount the selected 8TB hard drive securely and quietly. It was appreciably quieter than the compared WD drive, producing only a soft mechanical whirr rather than a more intrusive spin noise and surface-sensitive hum.

At $1,999, the E100A costs substantially more than an ordinary external USB drive, a comparison the reviewer explicitly acknowledges. However, HiFi Advice found its quieter operation, refined enclosure and significantly clearer, more defined musical result to make a persuasive case for the premium.
