The Threshold of Excellence in Sound Reproduction

As the next generation of the original LL2 LAMM vacuum tube preamplifiers, a main distinction of the LL2.1 is its almost inaudible sonic signature. When connected to the right LAMM amplifiers, it recreates a three-dimensional soundstage in the comfort of your own home.

Design Elements

The LL2.1 features a topology that brings out the most natural sound performance in the audio path, employing a pure class A operation from input to output; all stages are single-ended. The preamplifier’s audibly neutral power supply features a full-wave vacuum rectifier. This rectifier, together with a choke-containing filter, helps reduce the hum and buzz to almost negligible levels and ensures a variety of dynamic range without coloration.

Other features include 3 inputs; 1 tape loop; 2 sets of outputs; front panel muting switch; attenuator for gain reduction by 15 dB; built-in remote on/off for LAMM power amplifiers; protection circuitry coupled with automatic mute at turn on/off.

Components

Each preamplifier is hand-crafted with the highest quality materials, including military grade  low noise Dale metal film resistors; Noble potentiometers; Electrocube and Roederstein film capacitors; high frequency switching grade Cornell Dubilier electrolytic capacitors; and specially selected long life vacuum tubes. The LL2.1 features a custom-designed power transformer.

The LL2.1 is available in two versions: standard and deluxe, both of which utilize identical chassis, PC-board and parts.

In the deluxe version, the power supply energy storage is approximately twice that of the standard version (four identical light-blue capacitors next to the choke; only two of these are installed in the regular version — see first detail image insert).

Also, in the deluxe version, all film capacitors in critical pathways are situated next to polystyrene capacitors of the highest quality (see: yellow capacitors on two images — right and below).

Features

Unique topology

Brings out the most natural sound performance in the audio path

Standard and Deluxe models available

Deluxe model offers approximately twice the power supply energy storage as the Standard model. Additionally in the Deluxe model, all film capacitors in critical paths are paralleled by polystyrene capacitors of the highest available quality

Pure class A vacuum tube design

All stages are single-ended.

Drives any cable and any reasonable real world load

High-current drive capability, in combination with unique single-ended class A circuitry, allow the LL 2.1 to maintain its practically inaudible sonic signature.

Lamm Industries LL2.1 Preamplifier

The LL2.1 is a focused, high‑end tube preamplifier that prioritizes musical neutrality and transient authority. Operating in pure Class A single‑ended topology with a vacuum‑rectified, choke‑filtered supply, it delivers a crystalline top end, taut low frequencies and a natural midrange that preserves instrumental nuance. Measured distortion and IMD are impressively low, and the unit shows substantial voltage headroom for explosive transients and sustained dynamics. Dual‑mono architecture, heavy gold‑plated RCA connectors and a minimal signal path speak to refined build practice, while three line inputs, Direct pass and twin outputs cover essential setups. Ideal for listeners seeking an uncolored, high‑resolution front end to drive quality power amps. For detailed listening and bench impressions see John E. Johnson, Jr..

HomeTheaterHifi

"The LL2.1 operates in Pure Class A, Single-Ended, which to high end audio aficionados, is a heavenly specification."

Pros

  • Exceptional transparency and top‑end clarity supported by very low measured distortion, producing detailed retrieval across instruments.
  • Robust dynamic headroom and transient control—bench measurements show large voltage knees and clipping only at very high levels, matching the reviewer's experience of authoritative impact.
  • High‑quality construction and thoughtful topology (dual‑mono layout, vacuum rectifier, gold‑plated heavy RCA jacks) that minimize signal path components for cleaner sound.

Cons

  • Premium pricing may be a barrier for some buyers; the reviewer notes the LL2.1's cost as substantial despite justifying its performance.
  • Bench testing revealed a small amount of high‑frequency noise around 20 kHz (measurable but described as inaudible), which is detectable on analysis.

Transparency

91/100

Reviewers emphasize an unobstructed top end—'the top is crystal clear' and 'not holding anything back'—and measurements show very low THD+N (0.008% at 1 kHz). The spec'd vacuum rectifier with choke filter and 'audibly neutral' PSU support a clean background; no hiss/hum issues are reported. As a tube, it still manages exceptional neutrality, so score reflects near-reference transparency without multiple independent reviews.

Sound Quality

91/100

Dynamics

92/100

Measurements show robust voltage headroom (knees at 2 V and 70 V, clipping at 80 V) and the reviewer reports it handles transients without faltering—'very powerful preamplifier' with impressive transient slam (huge drum impression). These objective and subjective observations support strong micro/macro dynamics performance.

Soundstage Imaging

90/100

The reviewer notes excellent retrieval of instrument nuance and a clear, detailed top end that preserves spatial cues ('delivered every nuance for each instrument with a grace and ease'). While explicit measurements of imaging depth/width are not provided, listening impressions indicate tight imaging and natural layering.

Build Quality

91/100

Construction details are high-end: heavy gold-plated copper RCA jacks, dual-mono architecture, pure Class A single-ended topology, and a conservative internal layout to minimize parts in the signal path. The power-supply topology (vacuum rectifier with choke filter) and quality materials support a premium build impression.

Features Connectivity

85/100

Provides three stereo inputs (Line 1, Line 2, Direct), a tape loop, and two sets of single-ended outputs; Direct mode offers unity-pass operation and there is a remote on/off for certain Lamm amps. Missing are balanced XLRs, phono stage, DAC, or headphone output—feature set is solid for a high-end tube preamp but not exhaustive.

Value for Money

90/100

MSRP listed at $5,690–$5,990 and the reviewer states 'You get what you pay for' and suggests you're 'getting a little more than you pay for'—language that clearly endorses the price as justified. Value rating reflects a justified premium for performance and construction in its segment.
