Kinki Studio EX-P7
The EX Series has been fine-tuned to achieve a well-balanced sound quality with smooth extension at both the high and low ends of the frequency spectrum.
This results in a rich, detailed, and high-resolution sound that is sure to impress even the most discerning audiophiles. Furthermore, the preamp boasts a silky-smooth volume control, thanks to its discrete R2R volume control. This type of volume control is renowned for its precise and accurate adjustments, which are made possible through the use of precision-matched resistors.
RESISTOR LADDER VOLUME CONTROL
Unlike most preamps that use a potentiometer for volume control, the EX-P7 employs an advanced microprocessor-controlled, relay-based R2R steps attenuator.
This state-of-the-art volume control system features an ultra-precise fine linear volume control, which allows you to make fine adjustments to the volume level, even when listening late at night.
The use of this advanced technology ensures accurate, stable, and reliable volume control, without introducing any distortion or noise into the audio signal.
QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE OVER COST
The primary objective behind the analog volume control design of the EX-P7 preamp was to deliver a low noise, low distortion, detailed, and uncolored sound reproduction. This goal has been successfully achieved through the use of a relay-controlled attenuator, which employs multiple relays and resistors to attenuate the volume. Although the switching of the relays, at certain steps, may result in a low audible pop/click sound, this is completely normal and does not pose any harm to the amplifier or loudspeakers.
To attain the highest level of transparency and sound quality, the KINKI STUDIO EX-P7 incorporates a highly acclaimed precision multistep relay-controlled attenuator, coupled with precision hand-matched resistors that have long endurance.
This combination ensures that the design goal of reproducing the most accurate and transparent sound quality has been met, delivering a listening experience that is sure to please even the most discerning audiophiles.
QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE OVER COST
The EX-P7 preamp incorporates an extremely high-cost 0.2µm gold-plated printed circuit board (PCB), which is indicative of the designer's in-depth understanding of the limitations posed by general circuit boards' fine contact area.
In order to overcome this challenge, the designer has taken several measures, such as increasing the soldered area at each solder joint and incorporating as much shielding as possible, to ensure optimal performance.
Moreover, to prevent any interference between the Left and Right channel power supplies, the EX-P7 is equipped with two AMPLIMO transformers that are made in the UK, one for each channel. This design choice ensures that the power supply for each channel remains separate, thereby improving the channel separation.
Additionally, the EX-P7 is designed with a dual-mono configuration, housed within a single chassis, to provide an even more superior listening experience.
CRAFTED TO PERFECTION
The two AMPLIMO transformers, which are made in the UK, are installed within a CNC-machined aluminum enclosure, and the entire chassis of the EX-P7 preamp is constructed from 8-10mm thick anodized aluminum block.
This design ensures the elimination of unwanted electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) that could be induced from the surrounding equipment. As a result, the EX-P7 preamp provides superior sound quality, with greater clarity, precision, and detail.
Kinki Studio's design philosophy was focused on achieving both neutrality and musicality. The goal was to produce a sound signature that was rich in tonal quality, provided vivid sound imaging, details, high resolution, and dynamic range.
This was achieved through the careful selection of high-quality components, thoughtful design, and meticulous tuning. The resulting sound signature is unique to KINKI STUDIO's gear and represents the pinnacle of their engineering prowess.
The Universal Integrated Amp?
Today's Kinki should uncramp your finger and pull that trigger. The EX for 'extreme' in the name isn't idle puffery. It's well deserved. If enough people catch on, this amp will become a classic. For now, it could already be your classic. Classy all around!

Kinki Studio EX-P7 — precision-focused stereo preamplifier
Built around dual-mono Class A stages and a precision resistor-ladder volume control, the EX-P7 is defined by ultra-low distortion and incisive detail retrieval. Reviewers praised its speed, tight low end and impressive channel separation while noting a mild top-end lift that enhances perceived clarity. As John E. Johnson, Jr. measured, the unit maintains vanishingly low THD+N; Ken Redmond highlighted its agility and transparency; and Srajan Ebaen praised its build and natural depth-of-field compared with rivals. The EX-P7’s robust CNC aluminum chassis, gold-plated PCB traces and individually shielded transformers support high dynamics and staging. Ideal for listeners seeking technical accuracy or pairing with warmer amps/speakers, it represents a very strong value for a thoroughly engineered linestage.
Pros
- Exceptionally low distortion and high resolution, delivering very detailed, transparent playback.
- Fast, dynamic presentation with tight, controlled bass and strong imaging/separation.
- Robust engineering and build quality — dual-mono supplies, CNC-machined chassis, gold-plated PCB traces and a precision stepped volume control.
- Outstanding value for the level of sonic performance and construction in its price band.
&
Cons
- XLR inputs/outputs are largely an interface convenience rather than a fully balanced signal path.
- A slight top‑end lift and overall analytical lean (less lower‑mid density) may not suit listeners who prefer warm, tube-like coloration.
Transparency
91/100
Reviewers consistently note extremely low distortion and low noise (THD+N 0.003%, measured distortion figures very low), describing the EX-P7 as a 'truthful' conveyor with 'vanishing grain' and excellent detail retrieval. Bench results and the unit's independently regulated dual-mono supplies and JFET input buffer support a very clean, unobtrusive signal path; a slight 1.5 dB top-end rise is mentioned but does not dominate reviewers' transparency praise.
Sound Quality
92/100
Dynamics
92/100
Multiple reviewers highlight speed, agility and punch (’new set of tires’ analogy, 'speed and agility', tight, quick bass), and the design’s ±50V rails and independent supplies are cited as supporting high dynamic range. The EX-P7 preserves micro- and macro-dynamics well and drives partnered amplifiers with crisp authority.
Soundstage Imaging
91/100
Reviews report excellent channel separation (>90dB measured) and incisive resolution of low-level detail and soundstage information; 6 Moons notes a natural depth-of-field and believable spatial cues. Imaging precision and separation are strong attributes of this preamp.

Build Quality
94/100
Robust construction (CNC-machined thick anodized aluminum chassis, ~13kg), dual-mono regulated power supplies with toroidal transformers per channel, gold-plated PCB traces, and a high-resolution 256-step resistor-ladder volume control combine to make this a very well-built unit. Reviewers praise the physical design, EMI mitigation and overall craftsmanship.
Features Connectivity
86/100
Provides mirrored RCA (x2) and XLR (x1) inputs/outputs that stay simultaneously live (useful for balanced amp + RCA sub), a Hi/Lo gain switch, remote control and a 256-step volume control with unity-gain position. One review cautions that the XLRs are more a convenience than a truly balanced signal path, so full balanced-path bonuses were not applied.
Value for Money
93/100
Multiple reviewers call the EX-P7 an excellent/competitive value at its retail (roughly US$2,255 / substantially less in some markets), with comments that it offers build and sonic performance that punch above its price. Strong reviewer language (e.g., 'excellent value', 'very competitive price point', sub-€1,500 availability) supports a high value score.
