Pros

Punchy, deep and controlled bass gives music impressive physicality without overpowering the mix.

Highly resolving, spacious sound combines precise imaging with strong dynamic expression.

Premium build and well-distributed padding support extended listening comfort.

Cons

Open-back construction leaks substantial sound and provides little isolation, limiting use around others or in noisy spaces.

The included single-ended cable is only 1.2m long; reviewers note that a longer option would better suit many home amplifiers.

Bass can become slightly untidy when partnered with some tube amplifiers at higher levels.

What Reviewers Are Saying

"They make every song that come on sound phenomenal."

— Z Reviews

SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 90/100

Reviewers widely praise a smooth, warm-to-full-bodied and highly engaging presentation, with particularly strong bass impact, detail retrieval and dynamic drive. It is not presented as strictly neutral: several listeners hear an intimate or forward balance, while some flag restrained treble energy, localized glare, or midrange timbre that will not suit every listener.

Bass

94/100

Bass earns especially consistent praise for deep extension, speed, punch, texture and control. Headphonesty calls it quick, tight and authoritative, while The Headphone Show considers it among the best bass from a dynamic headphone; a minority of reviewers find the low end can become muddled or untidy with certain partnering gear.

Midrange

88/100

Many reviewers find the mids rich, clear and naturally full-bodied, with strong vocal and instrumental presence. However, the warmer, forward tuning is not universally convincing: some report overly thick male vocals, softened upper-mid presence, or less-than-ideal timbre on particular instruments.

Treble

86/100

The top end is generally detailed, smooth and free of persistent harshness, with reviewers appreciating its forgiving nature and lack of obvious sibilance. There are meaningful disagreements over its balance: some hear a slightly rolled-off or veiled brilliance, while others note lower-treble sharpness, minor glare, or fatigue from a high-frequency resonance.

Resolution Detail

91/100

The Clear MG is repeatedly described as highly resolving, revealing low-level instrumental strands, room ambience and fine vocal texture without generally sounding clinical. A few more critical listeners consider its technical detail merely competitive at this price, particularly where its fuller mids make dense elements harder to separate.

Soundstage Imaging

89/100

Reviews consistently commend stable placement, strong separation and precise imaging, with several hearing an enveloping, spacious presentation. Stage size is more contested: some reviewers find exceptional width, height and depth, while others describe a more forward, intimate or in-the-head stage than leading open-back rivals.

Dynamics

94/100

Punch, speed, slam and dynamic expression are standout strengths. Reviewers repeatedly describe forceful bass impact, convincing crescendos, excellent timing and lively microdynamic nuance, though one reviewer notes that the drivers can clip at extremely high listening levels.

Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.

Comfort Fit

91/100

Despite its 450g weight, most reviewers report excellent long-session comfort thanks to deep microfiber pads, well-judged clamp and a headband that distributes weight effectively. SoundGuys wore it for around five hours comfortably, and multiple reviewers describe all-day or hours-long wear; one reviewer nevertheless found the headband insufficiently padded and uncomfortable after 45 minutes.

Build Quality

94/100

Build and finish receive near-universal praise, with reviewers highlighting the aluminum yokes, secure adjustment mechanism, premium materials and luxurious fit and finish. Ecoustics found the construction durable, while What Hi-Fi? and Home Theater Review describe a notably high standard of structure and presentation.

Features Usability

90/100

The package is thoughtfully equipped for a wired open-back headphone, including a sturdy carrying case, 1.2m single-ended cable with adapter, and a 3m balanced XLR cable. Reviewers also find the 55-ohm design relatively easy to drive from portable players and modest sources, although a few report that source and amplifier matching can affect the sound.

Value for Money

88/100

At roughly $1,490-$1,599, the Clear MG is clearly a premium purchase, and some reviewers consider the price high or its performance insufficiently persuasive against alternatives. Still, several reviews call it competitive among peers, one describes it as excellent value at $1,500, and others regard it as one of the stronger open-back choices below $2,000.

Manufacturer's Description — Focal

Open-back hi-fi headphones for the home

Thanks to its exclusive open-back drivers, Clear Mg reveals the finest details of your music with precision and finesse. The headphones make you forget all about them... The solid aluminum yoke offers a pure, seamless design. Clear Mg is also the elegance of a finish combined with the comfort of a leather headband and microfiber earpads.

Pure sound

A benchmark among Focal open-back headphones, Clear Mg delivers outstanding sound performance thanks to its magnesium diaphragm loudspeakers. This ensures fine, precise, high-impact reproduction, providing a wide soundstage.

Total comfort

Comfort is the key to listening pleasure. The solid aluminum yoke has been developed to hug the face and offer a seamless design. The genuine leather and microfiber-covered headband offers a constant curvature, whatever the size of the head, for optimum seating once worn.

Refined headphones

With its warm, high-gloss Chestnut and Mixed-Metals finish and noble materials (leather, solid aluminum, etc.), Clear Mg is a headphone of highly polished elegance. Another key design feature is the honeycomb grille on the earcups, which ensures perfect sound opening and enhances the elegance of Clear Mg headphones.

Running-in

These headphones need a running-in period to reach full performance. This will happen naturally after several hours of listening. If you wish to accelerate the process, we recommend that you play the headphones for at least 24 hours at a relatively high volume level, on tracks rich in low frequencies. This will stabilize the loudspeakers and enable you to enjoy your headphones to the full.

Supplied accessories

Clear Mg comes with a carrying case woven in the headphones' colors and high-fidelity cables to suit different listening styles. An optional stand is available for elegantly displaying the headphones at home.
