My active monitor speakers, the Genelec 1030A, have been with me since 2000. I chose it back then because the 6-inch woofer was just right for use in the study, and the TEC Award halo was also very impressive. After more than ten years of use, the sound of these speakers has become more mellow and delicate.
I have never stopped tinkering with the Genelec system. Making Genelec sing with emotion is a big challenge. I have used many preamps before and after, and I have also designed preamps myself. A tube preamp completed in 2008 made me feel good for a long time. Tube rectification, 5687 for voltage regulation, and ECC81+ECC82 for amplification and output. The effective output range reaches 94.5V (peak to peak). The sound is as delicate, smooth and shiny as porcelain. This story will be told later, and maybe it can be productized when the opportunity is right.
Another preamp that I am most satisfied with was completed this year. Full transistor circuit, fully balanced, fully discrete, DC amplification, Class A. While making the technical indicators shine, I actually achieved excellent musicality. In addition to being proud, I cloned one and gave it to my good friend in Jinan, a hardcore music fan. A few days later, he called and simply said that he had put away a certain imported famous tube preamp that he had been using.
Formula P1000 was born from this.
My own sound evaluation of Formula P1000 is that it is very full, the vocals have flesh, the instrument has a cavity, and there are rich overtones from low frequency to high frequency. It has smoothness and dynamics, and is suitable for almost all types of music.
Because the output level of modern digital audio sources is relatively high, the gain setting of Formula P1000 is lower than that of traditional preamps, taking into account speakers and headphone systems.
