How does it work?

The human ear does not perceive sound in a linear way. Indeed, its specific amplification curve peaks around 4000 Hz and remains poorly sensitive in extreme high and low frequencies.

We should also note that ear sensitivity varies greatly depending on sound pressure.

Thus, when sound is attenuated, the ear naturally wants to compensate for all other frequencies that it does not naturally amplify and to which it is much less sensitive.
