How does it work?

The human ear does not perceive sound in a linear way. Indeed, its amplification curve, which is quite specific, peaks around 4000 Hz and remains relatively insensitive to extreme highs and lows.

It should also be noted that ear sensitivity varies greatly depending on sound pressure.

Thus, when sound is attenuated, the ear naturally wants to compensate for all other frequencies that it does not naturally amplify and to which it is much less sensitive.
