E.A.T. - European Audio Team Jo N°5 Cartridge

Ken Kessler calls the Jo N°5 "impeccably balanced, wholly musical and a true delight," while praising its poise across very different recordings. Vocals retained both nuance and power, and instrumental textures—including gravelly voices, bottleneck guitar and brass—were portrayed with vivid presence and confidence.

The cartridge retrieved fine vocal nuance, convincing instrumental textures and the power of older recordings without making them sound dated. Its nude fine-line stylus is supported by listening impressions of clear, composed handling of complex brass and subtle rhythmic textures, though the review gives limited direct comment on difficult inner-groove tracking.

Hi-Fi News was struck by the Jo N°5's "majestic scale," enormous soundstage and concert-like sense of occasion. It also produced a focused central image on a mono recording, while its airy bloom suited large orchestral-scale material.

Its 12µm/mN compliance should suit many medium-mass arms, while the 15g weight may require checking counterweight range on lighter designs. The 0.33mV output and recommended loading above 20 ohms mean a capable MC phono input or step-up solution is required, although the reviewer found it making music quickly with little setup fuss.

The Jo N°5 uses a nude fine-line stylus and a substantial 15g body, but the review offers little direct assessment of fit, finish, cantilever execution or long-term durability. Its construction appears purpose-built for serious moving-coil use, though ownership-quality evidence is limited.

At £999 in the Hi-Fi News review, Kessler describes the Jo N°5 as delivering "90%" of the performance of far costlier alternatives for "20% of the cost," explicitly calling it a bargain. That is unusually strong praise for a premium moving-coil cartridge and positions it as a compelling alternative to more expensive Japanese MC designs.
