Dynavector KARAT 17DX
The Dynavector KARAT 17DX brings open, glare-free transparency to vinyl, pairing authoritative bass with a notably expansive sense of recorded space. Its short solid-diamond cantilever and Micro-Ridge stylus support impressive insight, while The Broken Record found its soundstage especially large and revealing. For systems equipped for low-output MC playback, it is a deeply involving high-end tracker.

What Reviewers Are Saying
SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 90/100
The available listening report finds the 17DX notably transparent, open and free of glare, with capable bass performance. Much of the strongest praise concerns a modified “nuded” sample, but it still points to an engaging, highly revealing presentation from this design.
Overall Sound
90/100
The reviewer describes markedly greater transparency and an ability to hear deeper into the performance, without hardness when vocals or guitar become forceful. Bass handling is also singled out positively, and the cartridge is said to do everything well; the most enthusiastic comments, however, were made after the cartridge body was removed.
Tracking Retrieval
88/100
On Muddy Waters' Folk Singer, the reviewer felt able to hear virtually every inch of the studio space, indicating very strong low-level retrieval. There is no direct discussion of difficult-groove tracking, inner-groove distortion, or sibilance, so the evidence is stronger for information recovery than for tracing behavior under stress.
Soundstage Imaging
92/100
The review repeatedly calls out a bigger, more open, clearer soundstage, with the modified sample making the improvement especially pronounced. The sense of hearing further into the recording space suggests convincing spatial openness, although image precision and depth layering are not discussed in detail.
FEATURES USABILITY PERFORMANCE 80/100
Tonearm compatibility / system fit.
Tonearm Compatibility
80/100
Its 15 mm/N compliance and 11 g body suggest a workable match for many medium-mass tonearms, provided the arm is properly set up. As a 0.3 mV low-output moving coil, it needs a quiet, suitably gain-capable phono stage or step-up transformer, along with sensible loading and alignment.
Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.
Build Quality
86/100
The 17DX uses an unusually short solid-diamond cantilever and Micro-Ridge stylus, supported by carefully specified channel separation and balance. Reviewers provide little direct comment on assembly quality, durability, mounting hardware, or long-term ownership.
Value for Money
85/100
At roughly $1,599 to $2,450, the KARAT 17DX occupies a serious high-end moving-coil price bracket. The supplied review is enthusiastic about its sound but does not directly compare its asking price with competing cartridges or assess its value.

Manufacturer's Description — Dynavector
Low Output MC Cartridge with Diamond Cantilever
Description of KARAT 17DX
Drawing on Dynavector's 'dispersion theory' that produced the original world first KARAT series Dynavector are indeed proud to announce the entirely new 17DX KARAT Diamond phono cartridge. As in the past KARAT series, the frequency response of the new KARAT 17DX at 20 to 20,000 Hz is ruler flat providing an extremely accurate groove tracking ability. However, several new features will ensure that the new 17DX phono cartridge will shortly gain the same legendary status and soon surpass its predecessors.
Features and Improvements of KARAT 17DX phono cartridge
The rationale for the new KARAT 17DX phono cartridge was to significantly improve upon the now legendary original KARAT moving coil cartridge series. After exhaustive listening and technical research, the decision was made to incorporate a body machined from solid brass, Samarium-cobalt magnets for lower magnetic resistance, unmatched coil winding techniques, the incredible 1.7mm long cantilever with Micro Ridge stylus all combining in a brand-new KARAT 17DX phono cartridge that will delight the listener, providing clear and articulate reproduction of analog recordings without a hint of harshness in the high frequency range.
Karat 17DX showed a ruler flat response from 100 Hz to 30KHz of under ± 0.5 dB
