The conrad-johnson design team is committed to adapting the advances from our state-of-the-art pursuits to more affordable offerings accessible to a wider range of music lovers.

This resolve is clearly evident in our new range of Classic amplifiers. Borrowing heavily on the technology of our flagship ART amplifier, the Classic amplifiers preserve the distinctive tonal character of individual instruments and voices, with each clearly located within the overall acoustical environment of the original recording. Musical transients are reproduced with realistic impact, but without artificial enhancement. Like their more costly siblings, the Classic amplifiers capture the emotional impact of the live event, never getting between the listener and the musical performance.

There really is no mystery to our chosen path to outstanding musical performance: best results come from simple circuits executed with quality parts.

The circuit design for the Classic amplifiers is about as simple as possible, employing just seven vacuum tubes in the Classic Sixty-Two. Single-ended triode voltage gain and inverter stages are coupled to an output stage comprised of a single pair of ultra-linear operated EL34 tubes for each channel. The Classic One-Twenty adds a second pair of output tubes to each channel to achieve twice the output power. Simple but highly effective discrete voltage regulators supply rock-solid stable DC voltage to the critical voltage gain and inverter stages. And speaking of simple, maintenance of the Classic amplifiers could hardly be easier: the owner need only make a simple bias adjustment using the built in bias indicators when installing fresh output tubes.

The use of premium quality component parts is the other half of the conrad-johnson recipe for superior musicality.

In this area as well, the Classic amplifiers are leaders in their class. Precision, metal-film resistors yield low noise performance for greatest clarity. Polypropylene and polystyrene capacitors, chosen to achieve a high degree of temporal accuracy, are specified for both the audio cir¬cuits and the regulated plate voltage supplies for the input and inverter stages. The result is an exceptional range of dynamics – reproducing both subtle variations in level as well as dramatic loud crescendos. Our proprietary trans-spectral wide-bandwidth output transformers contribute importantly to the extended, “airy” highs that help distinguish the Classic amplifiers from ordinary tube amplifiers.

The base model Classic amplifiers offer an ideal introduction to the joys of modern tube amplifiers, while the ease of use, low maintenance costs, and reliability will be a revelation for those who have only experienced “entry-level” tube gear.

Those who wish to take the experience a step further will want to investigate the upgraded Classic Sixty-Two SE and Classic One-Twenty SE amplifiers. These special edition versions upgrade the output tubes to KT120s and incorporate CJD Teflon Capacitors and ultra high-performance metal foil resistors in strategic applications in the circuit. Any of the Classic amplifier models are sure to rekindle your passion for enjoying great music in your home.

Overview

Conrad Johnson's Classic 62 and Classic 120 tube amplifiers pair old-school craftsmanship with modern control, delivering an expansive soundstage and highly transparent, musical presentation. The Classic 62SE is noted for a three-dimensional soundfield that reaches well beyond speaker boundaries, while vocals and midrange remain palpably detailed and natural. Bass is taut and authoritative for a tube amplifier, and treble stays detailed without harshness, yielding lively dynamics and microdetail. Construction is traditional C-J — hefty transformers, gold chassis and a vented tube cage — with reviewers praising reliable operation and user-accessible biasing routines. Both TONEAudio MAGAZINE and Audiophilepure highlight imaging and transparency. Ideal for audiophiles seeking tube harmonic depth, the Classic series represents a purposefully engineered, high-value tube option.

Tone Audio

"The CL62SE regularly pushed musical elements so far to the left and right of the soundstage, my ears perked from the unexpected, but very welcome, experience."

Pros

  • Exceptionally expansive, three-dimensional soundstage that extends beyond speaker boundaries, creating an immersive listening experience.
  • Transparent, natural midrange and highly defined vocals that preserve harmonic depth without added coloration.
  • Controlled, taut low end and surprising dynamic authority for its rated power, delivering punch and musical drive.
  • Robust, classic build with reliable operation and straightforward biasing; reviewers regard the Classic series as strong value for its musical performance.

&

Cons

  • Requires regular tube biasing, warm-up time and periodic valve maintenance—more hands-on than a typical solid-state amp.
  • Moderate power (60 Wpc for the CL62) may limit headroom with very inefficient or demanding speakers; listeners seeking brute force may prefer solid-state alternatives or the higher-power CL120/CL120SE.

Dynamics

88/100

Reviews emphasize surprising authority for a tube amp of this power class (CL62: 60 Wpc). ToneAudio notes the 62SE has 'quite a bit of muscle despite its modest power rating' and that listeners are 'likely to be surprised at what the CL62SE is capable.' That praise, combined with clear descriptions of controlled, taut bass and good headroom relative to expectations for tube designs, supports a strong dynamics score in the upper 80s for this medium-power tube topology.

Soundstage Imaging

93/100

ToneAudio repeatedly praises an expansive, immersive soundstage that 'widens well above and behind the speakers' and 'extends the sound stage well in front of the speakers toward the listening seat,' calling it 'one of the most expansive and immersive ones experienced' in their room. That consistent, emphatic spatial praise supports a top-tier imaging score.

Build Quality

89/100

Construction and parts are described positively: reviewers note the 'hefty transformers' and classic, robust form factor and report reliable operation (Audiophilepure: 'completely reliable' with only minor tube bias tweaks). The physical heft, tidy layout and reliable performance earn a high build score while not quite claiming exotic reference-level construction.

Value for Money

92/100

ToneAudio explicitly calls the Classic Sixty Two SE 'a pinnacle of value at its $5,750 MSRP' while reviewers praise its musicality and capability given the 60 Wpc power rating. Relative to similarly priced tube gear, reviewers present strong positive value language ('stellar amp', 'pinnacle of value'), so the amp is judged to justify a premium in its class.
