Chord Electronics ULTIMA PRE 3
Built from the ground up, the UTLIMA PRE 3 takes advantage of the very latest developments in advanced low-distortion power supplies. These advanced devices offer exceptionally low noise and outstanding amplifier operation. Coupled with our latest design developments, the PRE 3 offers new levels of preamplifier performance.
The UTLIMA PRE 3 is equipped with five analogue inputs (two balanced and three unbalanced) all of which benefit from individual buffering and are selectively filtered against potential ingress from radio frequency interference.
Externally, the PRE 3 benefits from a completely redesigned aesthetic with a central circular power sphere flanked by a new volume control and balance/AV bypass selector, both of which benefit from a new ergonomic knob design.
Additional features include an AV bypass, plus a 5 V charging USB Type-A port.

Chord Electronics ULTIMA PRE 3 — overview
The Chord Electronics ULTIMA PRE 3 is a line-only preamplifier defined by exceptional transparency and a musical, open presentation. Reviewers David Price, Jay Garrett and Audiophilepure praised its translucent midband, taut timing and wide, accurate soundstage. Its aircraft‑grade aluminium casework, Blue Velvet ALPS volume control and careful PCB screening underline a premium build. Sonically it pairs rounded, well-controlled bass with glass‑clear mids, lively dynamics and precise imaging (100 dB channel separation; SNR -105 dB), making recordings feel immediate without sounding thin. Connectivity is straightforward—two XLR, three RCA plus AV bypass—so it suits analogue-first systems that prioritize neutrality and resolution. For buyers who want a revealing, well-engineered preamp rather than feature-packed versatility, the Ultima Pre 3 is a compelling choice.
Pros
- Exceptionally transparent, low-noise presentation that lets recordings resolve to reveal upstream components and detail.
- Highly resolving with excellent timing and dynamic control—renders micro- and macro-dynamics and instrument timbre with authority.
- Premium build and refined ergonomics—aircraft‑grade aluminium casework, solid machining and a high-quality ALPS volume control.
- Wide, precisely defined soundstage and imaging supported by strong channel separation and low noise floor.
&
Cons
- Line-only feature set—no phono stage, onboard DAC or headphone output—limits its appeal for users seeking an all-in-one hub.
- Relatively low output reserve for very inefficient speakers in large rooms; some users may need a more powerful power amp for party levels.
Transparency
93/100
Multiple reviewers describe the Ultima Pre 3 as 'self-effacing', 'dissolve into the original recording' and that quiet passages fall into 'inky-black silence', supported by a spec SNR of -105 dB. These reports and measurements point to an exceptionally low noise floor and minimal added coloration, justifying a top-tier transparency score.
Sound Quality
89/100
Dynamics
89/100
Reviewers highlight excellent timing and the ability to render micro- and macro-dynamics vividly ('dynamic light and shade', 'crescendos go really loud'). The one operational caveat is the unit's unity gain/relatively low output reserve for very inefficient speakers in large rooms, which slightly tempers the dynamic score.
Soundstage Imaging
90/100
Reports of large, well-defined soundstages and precise acuity ('ranged the accompanying orchestra across a large soundstage with impressive acuity') and excellent channel separation (spec: 100 dB) support a high imaging score.

Build Quality
92/100
Consistently praised aircraft-grade aluminium casework, solid machining, quality controls (Blue Velvet ALPS pot) and a well-executed industrial design give this preamp a premium feel. Internal design notes (NGR op-amps) and reassuring weight/fit-and-finish justify a very strong score.
Features Connectivity
83/100
The unit offers two balanced XLR inputs, three unbalanced RCA inputs and a dedicated AV bypass input, plus intuitive push-to-switch controls. It lacks onboard phono, DAC, headphone output, or extensive routing options, so its connectivity is solid for a high-end line preamp but not exhaustive.
Value for Money
90/100
Although reviewers note it's 'expensive for a line-only preamp', multiple reviewers conclude its performance makes it 'great value for money' within its segment (price listed ~9,275 USD). That justified-premium language supports a strong value score relative to peers.
