Cary Audio SLP-05 Preamplifier
The Cary Audio SLP-05 pairs holographic imaging with richly textured vocals, thunderous yet controlled bass, and a smooth, airy top end that stays composed at serious volume. Home Theater Review admired its natural transparency, while HiFi Huff praised its full-bodied tube sound, low noise, and exceptional scale. Fully balanced architecture, Cinema Bypass, and a separate power supply make this a compelling flagship control center.

Pros
Natural, richly layered vocal reproduction combines tube body with strong transparency and openness.
Deep, tight bass, expansive soundstaging, and smooth composure remain intact at high listening levels.
Two-chassis construction, balanced and RCA connectivity, headphone amplification, and Cinema Bypass support versatile system integration.
Premium fit and finish, including the solid aluminum faceplate and automotive-grade exterior, earn consistent praise.
Cons
High gain can make precise low-level listening and matching with sensitive speakers or high-gain amplifiers more challenging; a gain switch would help.
Remote operation is limited largely to volume and mute, with an awkward mute implementation and no input selection.

What Reviewers Are Saying
SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 95/100
Reviewers describe an unusually complete tube-preamp presentation: highly open and resolving, but also full-bodied, smooth and natural rather than thin or analytical. The SLP-05 is praised for deep, controlled bass, vivid vocal texture, strong composure at level, and expansive, holographic spatial presentation.
Transparency Resolution
96/100
HiFi Huff says the SLP-05 improves on the earlier Cary sound with more transparency, detail and air, while Home Theater Review heard exceptional transparency, quickness and openness. The latter also found the treble notably pure and the vocal reproduction strikingly natural, with the preamp revealing texture without making music sound lean.
Tonal Balance Musicality
96/100
The tonal character is repeatedly described as rich, smooth, natural and emotionally engaging. Home Theater Review praised beautiful, textured vocals and a very convincing live-performance quality, while HiFi Huff found the full frequency range extraordinary, with no sense of thinness, forwardness or missing weight.
Dynamics
94/100
HiFi Huff specifically credits the SLP-05 with greater dynamics than Cary's SLP-98P and says it remains smooth and composed even at high volume. Home Theater Review heard quickness, powerful and tightly controlled bass, and a system-level increase in scale and involvement.
Soundstage Imaging
95/100
HiFi Huff reports that the SLP-05 images extremely well and handles soundstage "with the best of them." In the accompanying video review, it is credited with a wide stage and holographic imaging that retain an emotionally involving sense of body and warmth.
Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.
Build Quality
94/100
The two-chassis layout separates the power supply from the sensitive audio circuitry, a design choice reviewers associate with lower noise and cleaner operation. Stereophile noted the tidy internal construction, carefully dressed wiring, solid aluminum faceplate and striking finish, while HiFi Huff called the fit and finish among the best it had encountered.
Features Connectivity
94/100
This is a comprehensively equipped analog preamp, with two balanced and three single-ended inputs, balanced and dual RCA preamp outputs, a tape monitor/effects loop, remote volume and muting, and a headphone amplifier. Its fully balanced operation and Cinema Bypass also make it especially adaptable for mixed two-channel and home-theater systems.
Value for Money
90/100
At roughly $8,000 when reviewed, Home Theater Review considered the SLP-05 a statement design offering nearly everything an audiophile could want from a no-compromise preamplifier. HiFi Huff preferred it to a substantially more expensive Niagara Classic, and also described the optional Ultimate Upgrade as a deal.
