  • DAC3 HGC - Full-Featured Version of the DAC3
  • DAC3 L - Removes the HPA2 Headphone Amplifier
  • DAC3 B - Removes the Volume Control and Analog Inputs

The Benchmark DAC3 delivers a clear, open, and uncluttered playback across the entire frequency range.

Instrumental overtones are rendered with exceptional precision and realism. Vocals are reproduced with outstanding accuracy and natural tones. Transients are fast and precise. Bass is deep and well controlled.

The ultra-linear phase response of the DAC3, allows it to create a precise three-dimensional rendering of the recorded space. This space is open and uncluttered because noise and distortion are held below the 0-dB SPL threshold of hearing at all playback levels.

This experience is not limited to the line-level outputs. The DAC3 HGC includes Benchmark's HPA2 0-Ohm Headphone Amplifier which easily drives difficult headphone loads.

Studio-grade clarity and deep, pitch-stable bass define this flexible DAC/preamp, with a convincing sense of space and striking separation that Tom Lyle -- Enjoy the Music.com and Michael Zisserson both praised. Its headphone amp and preamp sections add real system-simplifying utility, while the compact half-rack chassis keeps this ultra-clean performer easy to integrate.

What Reviewers Are Saying

"The Benchmark Media DAC3 HGC is a fantastic digital-to-analog converter that comes with a fantastic headphone amplifier with two outputs, and can also double as a fantastic preamplifier."

Enjoy The Music — Tom Lyle -- Enjoy the Music.com

Pros

Exceptional clarity, separation, and soundstage precision with a very transparent, uncolored presentation.

Bass is strong, stable, and well controlled, staying faithful to the recording without overwhelming the mix.

The headphone amp is powerful and capable of driving demanding headphones convincingly.

Highly versatile as a DAC, preamp, and headphone hub, with flexible inputs and output options.

&

Cons

Its highly honest, analytical character may feel too lean or unsparing in systems that need added warmth.

The half-rack form factor and pro-style layout may be awkward in some domestic setups.

Front-panel controls are small, so remote use may be more convenient for day-to-day operation.

SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 95/100

Reviewers consistently describe the DAC3 HGC as honest, balanced, and highly revealing, with no added coloration. It is praised for keeping vocals and instruments natural while also giving strong separation, stable bass, and a convincing sense of space.

Tonal Balance and Musicality

94/100

Reviewers repeatedly call the DAC3 HGC very balanced, honest, and uncolored, with a presentation that stays true to the recording. One reviewer noted that it does not color the sound, while another highlighted bass that was more in line with the recording than expected and never overpowered the rest of the music.

Resolution and Detail

96/100

The DAC3 HGC is described with unusually strong detail language: one review says "nothing was missing," and another emphasizes the "see-through quality" and air around instruments and voices. Reviewers also praise its ability to separate complex passages and reveal subtle musical information with impressive clarity.

Digital Performance

95/100

Reviewers report a very clean, controlled digital presentation with excellent transient handling and a quiet, transparent character. Measurements and comments point to flat response, extremely low noise, and strong immunity to jitter-related issues, with one review specifically praising perfect transient handling and the absence of anything missing in the presentation.

Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.

Build Quality

86/100

The DAC3 HGC is presented as a compact, professionally executed component with a small footprint and flexible setup options. The reviews say little about long-term construction quality, but the published specifications and the studio-oriented design suggest a serious, well-finished product rather than a flashy one.

Features Connectivity

93/100

This is a very well-equipped DAC/preamplifier. It offers five digital inputs, balanced and unbalanced analog outputs, dual headphone outputs, variable output functionality, a display with sample-rate and word-length indication, remote control support, home theater bypass, trigger control, and native DSD conversion.

Value for Money

91/100

Reviewers are clearly positive on value for this price class. One calls the $2,299 asking price a strong value, and another says the price is more than reasonable given the versatility and sound quality, especially when compared with much more expensive units.
