The Benchmark DAC3 delivers a clear, open, and uncluttered playback across the entire frequency range.

Instrumental overtones are rendered with exceptional precision and realism. Vocals are reproduced with outstanding accuracy and natural tones. Transients are fast and precise. Bass is deep and well controlled.

The ultra-linear phase response of the DAC3, allows it to create a precise three-dimensional rendering of the recorded space. This space is open and uncluttered because noise and distortion are held below the 0-dB SPL threshold of hearing at all playback levels.

This experience is not limited to the line-level outputs. The DAC3 HGC includes Benchmark's HPA2 0-Ohm Headphone Amplifier which easily drives difficult headphone loads.

Features Connectivity

84/100

Value for Money

86/100

The neutral, ultra-clean DAC3 B delivers a transparent presentation that exposes recording detail without hardening the sound. Roland Schmenner praised its music-first flow and technical quiet, while David Price highlighted its open, detailed soundstage and easy usability. It’s a refined, no-nonsense DAC for systems that reward precision.

What Reviewers Are Saying

"on several occasions, it was responsible for my jaw dropping in amazement."

Fidelity Magazine — Roland Schmenner

Pros

Exceptional neutrality and transparency, with a clean, artifact-free sound that reveals fine recording detail.

Strong soundstage performance, with natural imaging and impressive depth perspective.

Excellent digital handling, including plug-and-play USB use and very strong jitter rejection.

Solid, understated build and a fuss-free interface make it easy to live with.

&

Cons

Compared with some rivals, it can sound a little light in body and lacks extra warmth or romantic character.

The feature set is deliberately basic, with no preamp functionality in the B version.

SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 94/100

Reviewers describe the DAC3 B as neutral, transparent, and remarkably musical, with music presented 'incorruptibly' and a sense of flow that made one reviewer 'jaw dropping in amazement.' It is praised for sounding open, clear, and well-defined, while still staying supple and propulsive, though one review notes it can give up a little weight versus some rivals.

Tonal Balance and Musicality

93/100

The DAC3 B is repeatedly described as neutral and uncorrupted, with music conveyed 'without any sort of tinge' and a presentation that remains fast, flowing, and engaging. Reviewers also stress that it stays supple and propulsive, even if one notes it does not add extra weight compared with some competitors.

Resolution and Detail

95/100

Both reviews emphasize strong insight into recordings, from 'the full genius of Pollini' being revealed to the DAC3 B 'signposting what's right (and wrong)' in a track. It is called open, detailed, clear, and excellent at getting to the 'nitty-gritty' of a recording, with no suggestion that detail comes at the expense of ease.

Digital Performance

94/100

The published measurements are extremely strong, and the reviews match that with comments about easy USB recognition, near-instant lock-on, and immunity to jitter artifacts. Reviewers do not report glare, grain, or other digital harshness; instead they describe a clean, artifact-free presentation with a very stable sense of timing and ease.

Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.

Build Quality

88/100

Reviewers praise the DAC3 B as 'chunky brushed aluminium' with simple, haptically convincing casework and a no-nonsense, understated finish. They also highlight technical reliability and freedom from hum and noise, though there is limited discussion of deeper construction details beyond the solid, functional enclosure.

Features Connectivity

84/100

The DAC3 B offers a useful spread of connectivity for a standalone DAC: five digital inputs in total, including USB, two optical and two coaxial, plus both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA outputs. Reviewers note the lack of preamp functionality and the deliberately basic feature set, but the inclusion of a sample-rate display, word-length display, native DSD conversion, and bi-directional trigger support keeps it well equipped.

Value for Money

86/100

The reviews state the price around €2390 / £2049 and present the DAC3 B as a serious, well-engineered product, but they stop short of calling it a bargain. The value message is more that it is a disciplined, straightforward premium DAC than an obvious giant killer, so the asking price feels justified rather than especially cheap.
