Pros

Exceptionally revealing yet unfatiguing sound, with neutral tonality, rich texture, taut bass and transparent midrange.

Expansive soundstage and precise separation make complex recordings feel spacious, layered and three-dimensional.

Superbly quiet, smooth-loading transport and solid, carefully engineered chassis.

Strong rhythmic flow and convincing macro-dynamics preserve both delicacy and musical drive.

Cons

Premium pricing makes it a significant investment for a dedicated CD player.

No SACD playback, despite its high-end price point.

The supplied remote feels less premium than the player itself.

What Reviewers Are Saying

"There’s no better testament than when your music collection feels new and revitalised."

— StereoNET United Kingdom

"It plays in a relaxed, refined, elegant, subtle, wonderfully resolved yet delicate manner, but can also put its foot down at any time."

— hifitest.de

SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 95/100

Reviewers find the CX-8 exceptionally natural, refined and musically fluent, combining a neutral tonal character with substantial rhythmic drive. Its standout strengths are its ability to retrieve fine texture and spatial information from CD while maintaining an effortless, unforced presentation.

Tonal Balance Musicality

94/100

StereoNET describes tonality as "spot on," without glare or shrillness, with a taut, properly weighted low end and transparent midrange. Both reviews praise an elegant, relaxed and naturally neutral character, while also noting convincing pace, rhythmic flow and the ability to deliver real musical force when required.

Resolution Detail

96/100

Detail retrieval is a repeated highlight: StereoNET says the CX-8 extracts "oodles of texture, separation and depth" and calls its ability to excavate information from CD its forte. Hifitest likewise finds it brilliantly resolved and effortless, while the reported imaging, depth and sculptural three-dimensionality reinforce its unusually revealing presentation.

Digital Performance

94/100

Hifitest calls the player technically perfected, confident and quiet, with a presentation free of showy digital effects. Ayre's proprietary clock and minimum-phase filtering are intended to avoid pre-ringing, and reviewers hear the result as clean, composed and highly resolved rather than overtly clinical.

FEATURES USABILITY PERFORMANCE 86/100

For a high-end CD player, the CX-8 offers a well-considered disc-playing experience, comprehensive analogue and digital outputs, and optional expansion into DAC and network use. Review coverage is strongest on its quiet transport and clear rear-panel layout; there is less direct experience of its streaming control environment.

Streaming Software

84/100

The available specifications list Tidal Connect, Qobuz Connect, Spotify Connect and JPLAY certification, while the reviewed unit could be ordered with USB and Ethernet capability. However, neither review offers meaningful hands-on assessment of setup, app behaviour, reliability or long-term streaming operation.

Features Connectivity

89/100

The clearly labelled rear panel includes balanced and single-ended analogue outputs plus AES/EBU, optical and coaxial digital outputs. Optional USB and Ethernet connectivity can open access to the internal DAC and network playback, adding useful flexibility without compromising the CX-8's core identity as a disc player.

Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.

Build Quality

93/100

The CX-8 uses a carefully damped chassis, vibration-isolated transformer and enclosed TEAC transport chosen for reading reliability and quiet operation. StereoNET particularly praises the loading mechanism as the smoothest and quietest it has encountered, while also finding the metal-framed enclosure solid.

Value for Money

89/100

At approximately €6,180, the CX-8 is explicitly a premium-priced CD player, and StereoNET notes that it does not add SACD playback at that price. Even so, the reviewer considers its sonic performance sufficient to justify the outlay; compared with established CD-player alternatives such as the Primare and Yamaha CD-S2100 discussed in the review, it was heard as more subtle, involving and revealing.
