AVM Audition CB 2.3: A Masterpiece of Sound Art
„With its protruding baffle made of solid aluminum, the AVM Audition CB 2.3 almost resembles a built-in speaker. Those who are not put off by this will discover a true design piece featuring a high-quality bi-wiring connection. However, the extravagant design from back then has largely been retained. The actual bass reflex cabinet of the speaker measures only about 17 × 28.5 × 24 cm (width, height, depth), while the front baffle—characteristically made of solid aluminum—protrudes 2 to 2.5 cm on all four sides, measuring approximately 22 × 34.5 cm. This gives the Audition CB 2.3 an extremely slim and agile appearance, as the cabinet almost completely disappears behind the baffle from certain angles. Combined, the CS 30.3 and the Audition CB 2.3 form a small yet exquisite and, above all, highly modern HiFi system that primarily delivers unrestrained enjoyment. The amplifier stages of the CS 30.3 provide more than enough power for the compact speaker, allowing the combination to perform with effortless ease and captivating playfulness during listening tests. Remarkably, the system could be turned up quite high before the speakers reached their limits. The fun-oriented tuning of the Audition harmonizes best with corresponding music—AVM showcased a rock classic by AC/DC during the presentation at High End 2023. However, the system is less suitable for sensitive classical or complex orchestral works—despite an impressively spacious soundstage, it tends to overlook a few too many details. In conclusion: AVM once again proves its style. Contemporary technology, compactly packaged, presented in a minimalist and flawless manner—but most importantly: it must be fun. This is how modern HiFi should be!“

Back to the Future of Sound: AVM30 CS 30.3 and Audition CB 2.3 Tested
„Once upon a time, there was a time when a receiver with two bookshelf speakers stood in the living room. When things got lively, there was even a cassette player or a turntable on top. Everything was simple, compact, and living-room friendly. One doesn’t need to indulge in nostalgia to say: very sensible. AVM has taken the exciting experiment of beaming this idea into the future with all its digital refinements. A temptation for women too? How does one approach a compact device in 2023 that plays everything, is comparatively extremely affordable, and comes from a renowned German HiFi manufacturer, of which one can certainly say: They don’t do things by halves. Neither in sound nor in technology. Naturally, the all-in-one device AVM30 CS 30.3 had to endure the usual classification in comparison with the individual components of the reference system. However, the particularly intriguing question was whether one could achieve a comparable musical enjoyment through all the various inputs and playback options. There was little doubt from the outset that AVM can handle CDs, streaming, and HiRes formats, and that all of this ultimately delivers proper amplifier power to the speakers. But does the extremely tight budget still allow for a phono preamp that can keep pace with its digital counterparts? And who is this compact receiver aimed at within the broad range of AVM, which addresses sophisticated high-end users with the Ovation series? In fact, the phono input is one of the outstanding features of the latest offspring of AVM’s all-in-one family. It starts with the fact that the manufacturer targets precisely that group of consumers who do not want to spend hours fine-tuning cartridges but want to play a vinyl record as effortlessly as digital sources. Therefore, there is no intricate impedance adjustment, but rather two RCA jacks next to the phono input, into which plugs with 100, 200, or 1000 ohms can be inserted as needed. With the Kuzma Stabi Reference and Stogi Reference tonearm, it worked flawlessly with both the Benz LP and the Burmester B1 cartridges. The Benz felt most comfortable with its slightly higher internal resistance of 38 ohms using the 1-kOhm plugs. For the Burmester, with its only 5 ohms internal resistance, the 100-ohm plugs delivered the expected performance. This also indicates that the phono input is not limited to MM systems, which are then terminated with 47 kOhms. It also works excellently with “medium loud” MC systems like the Benz LP with its 0.34 mV output voltage. AVM CEO Udo Besser has clearly defined the direction for the CS 30.3 – and the brand-new Audition CB 2.3 speakers: a compact HiFi system with reliable quality that does not escalate into a Tower of Babel in its dimensions but harmoniously fits into any living room. “The HiFi industry has increasingly fragmented the components for listening to music into individual devices. Tower-like systems emerged that eventually no longer fit into the living room or were no longer accepted there. We want to bring music listening back into the living room with our all-in-one devices. And at a price that is still affordable for many customers.” In fact, with the 3990 euros for the AVM30 CS 30.3, a CD receiver with streaming and phono input is listed for the first time under 4000 euros in the manufacturer’s price list. The two-way speakers Audition CB 2.3, priced at 2990 euros, also have no price competition to fear. And all of this is “made in Germany,” except for the chassis for the speakers, which come from the Far East, and“
