View at AVID Hifi

Offering a penetrating vision into the soundscape of your music, instruments become etched within their own space, deep into the distance, giving you a wonderful three-dimensional portrayal of the performance that makes you believe your there.

With everything rigidly encapsulated within the solid aluminium body, there is never a hint of harshness, vocals as smooth as silk or raucous and live but never with distortion. Our Ionic low output Moving coil cartridge encapsulates all that is good about our designs in an attractive package, keeping true to our original design principles, but so much more affordable.

"It exuded scale and room-filling power"-Ken Kessler

Key Features

  • Aluminium Tube Cantilever
  • Eliptical Diamond Stylus
  • Aero Grade Aluminium Body
  • Realisim To Your Records

Flagship Principles

Employing the same approach to removing vibration away from the critical stylus point by using the same machined cartridge body allows vibration to pass into the tonearm rather than feeding back to the cantilever assembly, reducing the commonly heard 'needle-talk'.

Despite this being our entry model, we have managed to retain the same magnet assembly and coils, keeping cantilever dynamic inertia low, reducing the potential risk of record damage and making sure surface noise is low.

"Enjoyable sound of vinyl to the highest level."-Olaf Storm

awaken your music

With the Ionic cartridge on your turntable, you are guaranteed an outstanding musical performance from all your vinyl, bringing life and realism into your living room. Vocals leap out from the silent background and offering a deep soundstage that puts you in the audience, living with the music, the performance drawing you in.

Classical and opera aficionados will love the silent backgrounds and pin-point placement of instruments and singers, whilst rock fans will delight in the bass power and dynamic speed and precision, keeping the beat sure footed and secure. There is something for everyone with the Ionic.

Overall Score 85/100

Rating for [object Object]

Nicely Roasted

The tonal realism and spacious imaging of AVID Hifi’s moving-coil design make it immediately compelling, with HiFi News praising its deep, controlled presentation and The Audiophile Man highlighting its clarity and noise-floor drop. It favours texture, secure tracking and a refined, non-fatiguing flow over sheer bass drama.

The Audiophile Man — platform81

"Give it a good quality turntable and a suitably informative hi-fi chain and the AVID Ionic cartridge will not only open up a word of detail and information, it will be your sonic friend for life."

Pros

  • Delivers convincing tonal realism with fine vocal texture and low listening fatigue.
  • Produces a deep, open soundstage with strong three-dimensional imaging.
  • Tracks securely and reveals inner detail cleanly, even on complex or demanding grooves.
  • Balances punch and control well, making rock and live recordings feel energetic without turning harsh.

&

Cons

  • Its elliptical stylus and aluminium cantilever do not match the absolute tracing precision of AVID’s pricier models.
  • The soundstage is deep, but not as wide as the higher-end Boron and Ruby siblings.
  • Bass is natural and controlled rather than especially bold or overpowering.

Sound Quality

87/100

Weighted average of sub-criteria below.

Overall Sound

89/100

Reviewers consistently describe the Ionic as refined, realistic, and musically persuasive. Ken Kessler highlights tonal realism, vocal texture, and a presentation that is 'loud and weighty without sounding raucous or noisy,' while The Audiophile Man calls it 'all about detail and clarity' with midrange and treble that are 'all about realism.'

Tracking Retrieval

84/100

Tracking is praised as very secure for the class, with comments like 'sticking to the grooves like glue' and notes that it 'hardly struggled' and exposed tiny details buried in complex passages. The score stays in the mid-80s rather than higher because both reviews acknowledge the elliptical stylus and aluminium cantilever do not match the tracing ability and absolute precision of the pricier AVID models with Micro Ridge profiles.

Soundstage Imaging

87/100

The Ionic earns strong marks for spatial presentation, with one reviewer calling its soundstage 'one of the most open and broad that I've heard from any cartridge for a long time.' The other review describes it as deep and convincingly three-dimensional, though not quite as expansive as the more expensive siblings, so this lands in the very good range rather than exceptional.

Build Quality

84/100

The cartridge appears thoughtfully engineered and easy to live with, with a simple parallel-sided chassis that is 'supremely simple to line up' and an exposed cantilever that helps with setup and cueing. Reviewers also like the stylus guard, though the loose fit and rubber-band retention suggest practicality more than luxury perfection.

Features Usability

83/100

Tonearm compatibility is generally favorable for a conventional moving-coil design at this output level, but it does require a good-quality turntable and a suitably informative hi-fi chain to show its strengths. Setup is helped by the clear body shape and exposed cantilever, while the 0.32 mV output and >100 ohm loading mean it is a more serious system match than a plug-and-play universal fit.

The simple body shape and exposed cantilever make alignment and overhang adjustment straightforward, and reviewers explicitly note easy line-up and helpful cueing visibility. As a low-output MC at 0.32 mV, it is best suited to capable arms/phono stages and a well-matched system rather than the most casual setups.

Value for Money

81/100

Value is presented as reasonable but not bargain-level in the crowded £2000-ish moving-coil segment. Reviewers frame it as a 'serious premium purchase' that has its own personality and strong virtues, but they stop short of calling it a standout value or a price-busting deal.
