Audio Research LS28SE Line-Stage

View at Audio Research

A high-end preamplifier in its technical performance. An instrument in its ability to deliver a realistic and emotional connection to the music.

The LS28SE draws on Audio Research’s experience creating, of all things, our Reference 160-series power amplifiers. Numerous costly component upgrades elevate the LS28SE’s clarity, resolution, transient snap, and sense of space. The relaxed purity and natural sense of balance are instantly noticeable and will inspire extended listening sessions.

Flexible operation

The LS28SE line stage offers flexible and intuitive operation. Four balanced and four single-ended inputs, and two sets of both balanced and single-ended outputs allow maximum connectivity. Input naming, tube hours, auto shutdown, and the assignment of home theater passthrough are all easily directed through the menu. Phase invert and mono are also standard functions.

The impact of a great preamplifier on your music system must not be ignored.

While loudspeakers and power amplifiers are obviously critical to the sound you hear, preamplifiers are often underestimated. Musical stones lay unturned because most preamps do not stand up to the caliber of the system in which they reside. Enter LS28SE. Its organic tone and inner detail bring an instant vitality and refinement to systems formerly employing other preamplifiers.

Audio Research LS28SE Line-Stage

The Audio Research LS28SE is a tube line-stage that stands out for its transparent, ultra-refined presentation and modern feature set. Reviewers such as Grover Neville, John E. Johnson, Jr., and Best of High End highlight exceptional clarity, an open treble, and a tightened low end that improves transient snap. Performance-wise it delivers excellent imaging, control and micro/macro dynamics while offering practical tools — 103-step rotary volume, input naming, home-theatre bypass and a tube-hours indicator — plus four balanced and four single-ended inputs. The SE upgrades (proprietary gold coupling caps) sharpen resolution and sense of space without heavy-handed coloration. Built with refined chassis styling rather than massive billet panels, the LS28SE suits critical listeners with high-quality systems who want a truthful, detailed tube line-stage that justifies its high-end positioning.

Part Time Audiophile

"The Audio Research LS28SE is, pretty much, the best line stage I’ve had in my own system."

Pros

  • Exceptional transparency and detailed retrieval across the band, revealing recording nuance without adding obvious coloration.
  • Comprehensive, reviewer-friendly connectivity and controls: four balanced and four single‑ended inputs, balanced/SE outputs, HT bypass, input naming and a precise 103‑step volume.
  • Refined dynamics, tight transients and excellent imaging that preserve both micro- and macro-dynamic contrasts.
  • Upgraded internal components (SE model gold coupling caps) and solid, purposeful build that elevate resolution and sense of space.

&

Cons

  • Reveals weaknesses in lesser source/amplification — demands careful system matching to shine.
  • Lean, tightened low end may not satisfy listeners seeking lush, heavily colored mid-bass.

Transparency

92/100

Multiple reviewers describe the LS28SE as 'transparent', 'nearly dead neutral' and 'truthful' with abundant clarity and detail, indicating a very low subjective coloration. The tube topology might imply some euphonic character, but reviewers explicitly note the unit gets out of the way and reveals where recordings are lacking, supporting a high transparency score.

Dynamics

90/100

Reviews call out improved transient snap, sense of control, and an engaging, lively presentation ('transient snap', 'clarity, openness and control that is addictive'). The unit preserves micro- and macro-dynamics well, delivering punch and articulation without sounding compressed.

Soundstage Imaging

90/100

Imaging and sense of space are repeatedly noted ('imaging performance was excellent', 'sense of space' and 'relaxed purity'), with strong channel definition and a believable soundstage depth and width. The LS28SE consistently projects precise imaging in reviewer systems.

Build Quality

87/100

Construction is well executed though not overly heavy or billet-machined; reviewers note a slimmer, elegant chassis and a classy front panel. Internals and power supplies are refined (regulated supplies, upgraded gold coupling caps on SE model) and the control set (103-step rotary volume, mute/invert/mono) supports a high but not ultra-luxury build score.

Features Connectivity

90/100

Well appointed: four balanced and four single-ended inputs, balanced and SE main outputs, a record/tape out, home-theatre bypass, phase invert and mono functions, and input naming/LED menu. The combination of balanced I/O, multiple outputs and HT bypass places it in the fully-featured category for a line-stage.

Value for Money

89/100

Reviewers explicitly state the LS28SE justifies its price in the high-end bracket ('you'd be hard pressed to find anything under this price that will even come close', 'never questioned if the price was unreasonable'). Given the sonic performance and feature set at ~€11,500–12,000, reviewers view it as a justified premium purchase.
