What Hi-Fi describes an evenly balanced sound with treble that has bite without becoming hard, alongside a muscular and satisfying low end. Both reviews strongly praise its fluidity, emotional involvement and sheer sense of fun, with Sound Advice calling its output infectious and engaging across genres.

What Hi-Fi hears a stunning level of detail in voices and piano, with guitars, bass textures and rhythmic leading edges relayed convincingly. The player also produces a large, room-filling soundstage that remains open and controlled rather than overwhelming.

The CD5's ESS-based conversion is heard as clean, composed and precise without tipping into an overly analytical character. One caveat is that What Hi-Fi advises avoiding the phase filter, which it says reduces dynamics, spaciousness and musicality.

As a CD player, the CD5 has no streaming platform, and reviewers do not treat that as a shortcoming. The remote-accessed menu provides practical controls for display settings, timing information, repeat, shuffle and digital-filter selection, with no usability issues reported.

The player supports CD, CD-R and CD-RW discs, plus USB playback of WAV, FLAC, WMA, MP3 and AAC files. It provides coaxial and optical digital outputs alongside RCA analogue outputs, but What Hi-Fi notes that connections are kept to a minimum.

What Hi-Fi finds the aluminium-bodied player robust, sleek and made to a high standard. The understated Radia styling and rear-panel cowl are also noted as thoughtful touches, though the reviews offer limited comment on long-term mechanism durability.

At roughly £700, Sound Advice calls the CD5 extremely good value and finds its sonic performance tremendously enjoyable for the price. What Hi-Fi adds that moving materially beyond its clarity, timing and refinement would require spending more than twice as much on the Cyrus CDi.
