Advance Paris PlayStream A5 — a feature-packed streaming integrated
The Advance Paris PlayStream A5 is a compact yet feature-packed streaming amplifier that reviewers praise for punchy dynamics, midrange clarity and an open, well-layered soundstage. David Neice and Paul Rigby highlight its Burr‑Brown PCM1796 DAC, 80W/Class AB power, visible VU meters and a toroidal-powered chassis as contributors to a musical, easy-listening presentation. Connectivity is exceptional: five line inputs, coax/optical/USB, Ethernet/Wi‑Fi, DAB+/FM and a phono stage that handles MM/MC — plus optional aptX HD Bluetooth. The A5 suits listeners who want an all-in-one streaming hub or a sonic upgrade from entry-level amps, offering rare breadth of features and strong sonic performance that reviewers call a compelling value proposition for its class.
Pros
- Exceptionally comprehensive connectivity and streaming features, including Ethernet/Wi‑Fi, multiple digital and analog ins, DAB+/FM and upgradable aptX HD Bluetooth.
- Strong, musical sonic presentation with clear midrange, smooth treble, controlled bass and lively dynamics that work well with monitor speakers.
- Well-built, classy styling with retro dual VU meters and a substantial chassis that reflects a capable power supply.
- Excellent value for money given the breadth of features and the level of sonics, often recommended as an upgrade from sub‑£/CAD‑entry systems.
&
Cons
- Onboard MM/MC phono stage is only adequate compared with standalone phono preamps and may prompt vinyl users to fit an external phono solution.
- Network streaming setup and the Playstream app can be fiddly; reviewers report Wi‑Fi pairing and app navigation require patience.
- Bluetooth high‑res support requires an optional dongle (aptX/aptX HD), so out‑of‑the‑box Bluetooth convenience is limited unless you purchase the accessory.
